computer sluggish on booting up and other issues!

Hi,
Until recently my Windows 7 computer (Dell XPS 8300) has been working fine. I have not added or removed any programs for ages apart from adding the GoPro Studio software about 6 weeks ago. But on Monday after booting up ok I was unable to access the internet using my Virgin broadband using a wired router and phone line. The icon on the desktop said I had internet access but when I open IE9 or firefox I just got a blank white screen. I decided to restart the computer. At the shutting down screen it just hung with small occasional flashes from the hard drive. I left the system about 30 mins and eventually switched it off at the mains. On restarting when it got to the welcome screen as it went to black just prior to going to the desktop screen them the hard drive access light stopped for a while and them a min or so later went into windows. All the icons took ages to load. When everthing had loaded I tried internet explorer but when I clicked on its icon nothing loaded. Other prgrams were equally slow to respond including text documents. It was as though the computer was accessing other programs in the back ground and was "busy". I decided to shut down the computer- which worked. And after a short while switched it on again. This time everything loaded as normal and I had internet access. It worked completely ok for a range of other programs for the rest of the day and every day since until today Friday. On loading today I got a yellow triangle error on the internet icon saying no internet access. Everything else seemed fine. I shut down the computer and again it hung. On rebooting again it took ages but after about 15 mins in windows everything speeded up and I could access the net. Prior to that programs again took ages to load. I set up a scan disc and shut down the computer. On shutting down the screen said installing updates 35% and when it reached 100% it switched off. On rebooting it performed the scan disc with no errors and restarted. Just before the welcome screen it again mentioned installing updates and them display the message "cleaning up. Do not turn off your computer". I have never seen the cleaning up message before. After about 20 mins it went into windows and so far everything seems ok including internet access. But what are these updates as nothing was listed prior to restarting and looking in the history the last one goes back to the 25th November. That was downloading but not installing IE11. Could that be the issue as I choose not to install it and have "hidden" the update for the time being. Other updates to do with security etc were installed on the 20th November. Should I install IE 11 (though am happy with IE 9) or is that not likely to be connected to this current issue?

As the system was performing well earlier you should first perform a system restore:

If the issue occurs again then you can clean boot the system and then check the performance:
