Computer Tech DELETED My Account!

Hi,

My computer technician updated my computer from Windows Vista to Windows 7 , but unfortunately when I turned on my computer all of the accounts that were previously on it prior to the updating were deleted. Is there a way to recover those deleted accounts and the files on them, and is it necessary for a computer technician to delete accounts in order to update a computer?

Check to see if you have a Windows.old folder on the C: drive

I did as you suggested, but there is no file under my C Drive called Windows.old
Is there another way to recover my account or is it permanently deleted? :sarc:

If your computer tech did a complete clean install, he probably formatted your Vista hard drive & wiped out all your previous stuff. Did you make any backups ?

I only had a few files backed up on a portable device, so are all my files permanently irrecoverable? Is there any type of program that can recover at least some of the files I lost? Is it necessary for a Tech to delete accounts on the computer in order to update a system or is just optional/the Tech's choice ?

Why didn`t you get your data before he did the upgrade, very poor planning.

The 1st question a responsible tech would have asked you is, do you have any files on your pc you want to keep ?

It wasn't exactly poor planning on my part, because the last system update my computer received didn't result in the technician deleting all my accounts. My computer Tech previously updated my computer from Windows XP to Vista , so why would the procedure change when it came to updating it from Windows Vista to Windows 7?

Download this program and type in Windows old and I'm sure you will find it.
When I did a complete clean install of Windows 7, it was still saved.

You should be in the habit of creating an image of your OS- here are some tips:
If you purchase a Seagate, WD or Maxtor, you can get the Acronis Trueimage software (free) and make an image of your OS and

put it on your external hdd. ( or my preference on anotherinternal hdd)

If you need to recover your OS ( including programs, updates, etc) you can do it with a few clicks.

You can also use Easeus for free and any hdd will work.

An upgrade can save all your info in a Windows.old file, a complete re install will wipe everything out. As suggested, you have to talk to the tech and ask him exactly what he did. There are ways of retrieving the data, start by Googleing how to retrieve the info.

You should always back up all data. Anytime anyone touches your computer always have your data backed up.
