Hi I do share my laptop's connection to my desktop. I connect it via LAN and then share it over WIFI ( turning my laptops wifi card as a virtual router )I had to turn on the ICS feature in LAN. I have installed Virtual router plus. I did purchase a wifi card for desktop for 500 Rupees approx $10 )
I guess in your case you don't have wifi card in Desktop. Ok so here is what you need to try. Get the internet on laptop via WIFI.
Turn on the Internet sharing feature in wireless lan properties for your Ethernet /LAN.
Connect an ethernet cable to your desktop and laptop's ethernet port. TURN OFF FIREWALL of antivirus.
Usually it should work .. Let me know if you get a yellow bang or limited connection. I dont know which OS are you using.
