Computer will not boot normally, must use safe mode

I've been having this problem for awhile now, and while the problem did subside because I used system restore, the problem has found its way back again.

Whenever I would boot my computer, the splash screen would hang and would not move onto the password screen. I would then have to restart my computer and activate safe mode so I can access system restore, find a restore point and go back to how it was earlier. I know for a fact that the Windows updates have been the key problem here, so I always backtrack a few system restores before that.

Now, the problem has come back and my restore points are ALL GONE. As I'm typing this, I am running SFC /SCANNOW, and here is the message that comes up at the end:

WINDOWS RESOURCE PROTECTION DID NOT FIND ANY INTEGRITY VIOLATIONS.

What does this mean?

Also, I cannot access system protection. On the System page, there are only three options, when there should be four. What is going on here? If I try to restart my computer without safe mode, it will just hang again.

Thank you in advance.

It could very well be that there is a problem with the startup programs. Disable them all (for a test) in msconfig >startup button. If that works, you have to disable them one by one to find the culprit. Very often it is the AV program that plays acts like this.

It could also be a virus or some type of malware, torjan or worm hidden in the system. Then you would need to run your antivirus and malware software in safemode.

whs - Okay, i'll look into that.
bassfisher6522 - Okay, I'll look into that too. This whole time I haven't thought about using some sort of anti-virus. Currently running Malware Bytes. Will post up the results soon.

Okay, this might be promising. After opening my system restore page, i find this:

System restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system.

A Volume System Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information (0x80042302)

What does this mean?

Did you try running it from DVD or Repair CD as opposed to onboard WinRe which itself may be corrupt?

I would start at the top of the steps since it might still be infected and won't repair until cleaned up.

1. If possible unplug all other HD's. Boot into BIOS setup by tapping the key given for this on first boot screen, check that Windows 7 HD is detected and set to boot first (after CD/DVD drive).

I am currently running an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop. How do I unplug the hard drive (or am I supposed to unplug any secondary HDs?). How do i boot into BIOS mode and boot 'first'?

Sorry for all of these questions, my only computer repair experience I have is cleaning up viruses.

Is this Malwarebytes being run in Safe Mode or a bootable AV CD?

You only need to change the boot order to boot a disk to do those repairs. Or you can trigger the disk to boot using one-time BIOS Boot Menu key given on first screen.

So what you're saying is, I download the iso to a CD/flash drive, boot that up from the F10 menu, and from there, I do the startup repair? or system restore?

Btw, I found a Trojan on my computer, but the problem did not fix itself. It was Trojan.FakeAlert, found by MalwareBytes.

Just to make this clear to future readers

You must run a "FULL SCAN" (takes hours on my pc's) on your choice of virus checker!
And run at least two different virus checkers - which may pick up different malware on your system.
(disable one when the other runs & vice versa)

Kwik-Scan will miss stuff!
