Solved Computer won't turn on, PSU ticking

Hey guys, so I've ran into a problem with my PC..
I logged on one day, and before I could do anything,
the computer shut down and refuses to turn on. The lights on my keyboard are flashing
and the PSU makes this weird ticking noise whenever it's on.
Is it an issue with the PSU? Could it be dead?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news; but yes; this does in fact sound like your psu is dead. Especially if it makes a ticking noise like that. Psu's arent normally suppose to make noise with the exception of 1 or 2 cooling fans that might make a faint whirring noise which is normal. But a louder ticking noise sounds to me like indeed it is dead; especially if the keyboard lights are flashing.

However, I did test my PSU using the paperclip
method:

And it did turn on, the fan started whirring, but it was
kind of loud.

Any ideas as to why it could turn on?

the paper clip trick not a real test since it doesn't have a load on it. just tells you that it can start. from your first post discription sounds like the power supply is faulty.

Since it will turn on when you override the control circuit with the clip, I would be more inclined to look for an overload / short in the PC. Don't know what your specs are as my access to this forum has been screwed up for a few months, but if it is a full sized computer try by removing any cards that are not needed to boot. Art.
