Hi there,

I turned on my laptop today, and I got the message "Windows failed to configure updates, reverting changes' at the logon screen, and it just loops there forever, even if i leave it there for like an hour. I can't shutdown or restart, unless I power it down.

I tried to boot into safe mode, but i can't do that either, I get the same message, and last known configuration doesn't work either.

I go to system restore, and it just fails on every system restore image. says something about failing to extract a different file each time, and the registry could not be copied on one of them.

It won't let me run a SFC /scannow check either, and I just can't get passed the logon screen stage. Startup repair doesn't help either, just says everything is fine and that my boot was successful :S weird.

Any ideas or suggestions, minimizing having to format and reinstall windows - as it's got all my alevel work on it o.0

thanks in advance!

Hello,

Solved same problem today on two computers running Win7. Both failed installing four upodates and have been like this for several days.
SOLUTION: Go to Win Update. View the four files that Win 7 is trying to update. You will see four updates with their boxes checked for auto update. Unclick update KB982018 and update only the remaining three. Later update KB982018 separately. You can also manually update these individually. This worked for me.

Jim B, you are a jewel!

I have been having the exact same problem; it has been driving me crazy for 2 days now.
I tried your fix and it worked beautifully!
Thanks so much for taking the time to provide help for the rest of us.
