Windows Version Microsoft Windows 7 (6.1) Professional 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601)
DirectX Version 11.0

( was restored from date dec 2018 ? )

Mainboard Model Z170X-Ultra Gaming-CF (0x000006A8 - 0x9BB5CB98)

NVIDA 980TI graphics

It seams my setup is incompatible with Microsoft updates
When I try to update this system it hangs on "Configuring updates forever and ever please do not shut off your computer" that will go on for a day and it would not boot because it is forever trying to "prepare my desktop

Then when I go into safe mode WINDOWS UPDATE is missing in the control panel.

I restored the system back to a image now I will start over and figure out how to run the update or find out what update is causing problems

I read that I could run the update readiness

I saw I could download a update readiness I went to run that update readiness but it was dated 2014 that does not seam like it will help me know if my computer is ready for a update in 2019 ? Or will it. ?

Does anyone know about this update that causes the symptoms I have described ?

Hi DonM123,

1. System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

So this must be still valid so I will run it.

It is still valid.

To run SURT [System Update Readiness Tool], please follow my instructions below!

SURT

SURT [System Update Readiness Tool] is a self-installing utility that executes when you install it. It is used because of an inconsistency found in the Windows servicing store that may prevent the successful installation of updates, service packs, and software. It checks for these inconsistencies [integrity] and tries to fix any issues found. It supports all versions of Windows 7 SP1. When SURT is run, it will create two log files, CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log, both in the temporary folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\.

SURT 32-bit download => System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 x86-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014].

SURT 64-bit download => System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014].

[1] Install SURT [it will automatically run on installation and may take about 15 minutes or so to complete].
[2] Post the log: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ CBS.log .
[3] Post the log: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ CheckSUR.log .
[4] Post the log: C:\Windows\ WindowsUpdate.log.

SUGGESTION: It is advisable to turn off the power options for sleep etc while this is running because it could take a while.

I am sure that someone will be able to look at the logs and give you an answer.
