Hello everybody,

I am currently staying at a hostel which offers free wireless lan but for some reason I cannot get access to it despite being connected (and having quite good reception). Been trying to figure it out for the last days but cannot find a solution. With my cellphone I do not have any problems and can get access to the internet but my laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) does not work. A couple of other people here have the same problem (but we cannot figure out a common aspect), for the vast majority it just works fine.

I browsed through several threads with similar problems but they usually refer to home networks or had slightly different problems. I already tried a couple of proposed solutions:

- ipconfig /release and /renew
- I have restored the system
- disabled the firewall
- I ran arp-d *
nbtstat -R
ipconfig /flushdns
- McAfee is not installed (as this seemed to be a problem for some users)
- I ran Netsh winsock reset
- I also changed the IP to a static IP
IPv4-Adresse . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.several numbers
Subnetzmaske . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.252.0
Standardgateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP-Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
- I also set the DHCP-Server to several other values that were proposed in threads.

I really cannot figure out what the problem is so I wanted to ask whether anybody has another idea.
The weird thing (to me) is that whenever I e.g. set the IP to a static IP and then change the settings back to receive IP automatically, the number of received bytes goes up within one second to around 800 but then stops and I still end up with no internet access and a little yellow "!".

Any suggestions are much appreciated, thank you in advance.

Best regards,
Tim

Hello,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, both solutions did not help. I re-added the network and updated the driver - no changes.

What I noticed when looking at the output from ipconfig was that my IP address is not "in the range". It is 192.168.2.xx while the other is 192.168.1.xx - could that have anything to do with it and can I fix it?

Best regards

Maybe your computer and the default gateway doesn't use the same subnet mask, and your DHCP leasing some incorrect IP configuration. 255.255.252.0 (/22) will go from 192.168.0.0-192.168.3.255 and that's didn't look correct for a home network with 5 devices.
So check what IP configuration your DHCP server is lending and what setting your default gateway have.

Is it possible for you to find someone that you know and see if you can get an ipconfig/all output from his/her computer then you may assign a Static IP?

@ 2xg:

I checked the ipconfig on a friend's computer. To my knowledge everything looked the same (apart from her IP which was 192.168.1.XX - that was the reason why I asked whether this could have been a problem). Based on this I assigned a static IP with the values but still no connection.

@ tomerello:

I am not sure whether I understand your suggestion correctly. Automatic configuration is enabled as you can see from the output that I posted above. Could you be a bit more specific on what I should look for?

In general, is it correct to assume the problem is located in my wireless lan card? Because if so I might consider buying an external wifi adapter to solve it if no other solutions are available.

See if the TCP/IP Stack Repair helps.

If more than one person is affected, I'd consult someone in IT Department regarding the issue, if you have not done this router yet.

That did not help either. I really do not understand what it could be. Can I give you any more information regarding my laptop or settings that might help you isolating the problem? Is is wifi card related or could it be a software issue?

There is no real IT Department here in the hostel, the only person I already consulted is the owner of the hostel but he was not particularly helpful.

Do other people have the same issue?

Try booting your machine in Safe Mode with Networking to see if a third party application is causing the issue. Also try to temporarily disable your firewall and A/V as these can cause issues.

To boot into safe mode please follow this tutorial (OPTION ONE ONLY) - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/69585-safe-mode.html

Please replace all references of 'Safe Mode' with 'Safe Mode with Networking'

Please post back your findings so we can propose an appropriate solution,

Many Thanks,
Josh! :)

From the ipconfig you are showing a valid IP, the left overs from McAfee may be causing this problem so uninstalling per the directions in the link below may help.

Interesting how it works right after I posted the McAfee removal tool.

I'm curious if you ran the tool to remove McAfee or not?

@ chev65:

I did not run the tool. McAfee was not installed in the first place (in that sense, my post in the first thread may have been a little misleading but since a lot of people had issues with this I thought I mention that it is not installed, should have said never installed)

I am actually not certain what exactly helped as I always had to go through a nearby wlan spot at the university to which I could connect to look at the suggestions and then tried out a number of things (to then walk back and see whether there was a change). I also uninstalled some software (although to be honest, there was no real system behind it and I do not think that this was really the cause). I will see whether I can find other people here who initially had the same problems and then see what might help them as well.
