COnnected to network, Browser pages not loading.

I am using an Acer Aspire desktop, wirelessly connected to my router. I have had it about two years now.

A few months ago, Comcast installed a new router in our house. Since then, my computer has kept a perfect connection. However, any browsers I have tried to use acts as though there isn't a connection. It just constantly loads the page until it finally tells me it can't. My computer is the only device that can't connect to this network, so I don't believe it is necessarily a problem with the router.

I have noticed this being a fairly common problem, and more often than not it seems to be a pretty easy fix given that you know what to do.


I am absolutely stumped as to what the problem could be for me. Here are all the things I have tried thus far. I am unfamiliar with a lot of computer terminology, so forgive me if I say things incorrectly.


Reinstalled wireless adapter drivers - worked for a few seconds then stopped.
Completely disabled firewall and antivirus.
Ran the Norton Removal Tool multiple times.
Manually reset the winsock catalog in an elevated command prompt : netsh winsock reset catalog - Worked for a little while, then stopped.
Along with the winsock reset, I did: netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt.
I put in a command to flush the DNS.
This 'Bonjour' program I keep hearing about looking out for isn't on here.
I went in to Internet Options to uncheck the box that allows me to use proxies - It never was checked.
Got updated drivers for my adapter - didn't help.
I ping google - it is coming back with 0% lost.
I ping 4.2.2.2 and it comes back with 0 % loss.
I went under Internet Protocol 4 and entered in the prefered DNS server as 4.2.2.2 and the alternate DNS server as 8.8.8.8. I saw this in a video, which seemed to help the guy talking, but not me.
After dealing with this over the course of several months, I got fed up. I decided to completely format my computer to its default factory state. I then installed my adapter drivers, and after all of that - still didn't help at all.

I am becoming very desperate for help on this. At this point i am thinking it is something that just so happened to go wrong with my adapter after getting a new router. That, or there is something IS wrong with the router. I don't know where to begin examining these for a problem. I would try a different internet adapter, but i don't want to waste money on something that may or may not help me.
My college classes start back up next month, so I really need to get this fixed quickly. Any help at all will be appreciated. Thanks.

I've been trying to assist someone on MajorGeeks with an absolutely identical problem, so far without success so I'm interested in this. One thing you haven't tried yet is to use a wired connection if that would be practical.

Also, what exactly do you mean by your computer maintaining a perfect connection to the router? How are you determining this?

Thanks. No, I haven't tried a wired connection yet. I don't know if I really have the ability to pull that off if I'm honest. Do you know of any other steps I could take until I am in a position where I can at least try?

Sorry. All I meant by that was that my computer has always been showing a very strong connection to the network at the bottom right in the task bar.

No expertise required to make a wired connection, just a suitably long Ethernet cable plugged into a router port and your Acer. For the best test also go into Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings. Right click the Ethernet adapter and enable it if it is disabled and do the opposite with the wireless adapter.

This connection icon in the taskbar does say Internet Access when you hover over it?

The only other thing I can think of that you haven't done would be to set a fixed IP rather than having it on Automatic, but I doubt that would make any difference.

Yes, it does say that there is internet access.

I just brought my computer next to the router and hooked it up. Took only a minute or so. It seems to be working fine without the wired connection, but this could stop any moment. in fact, I sort of expect it to. About to try a wired connection.

UPDATE: It is working with a wired connection. All I did was plug in the ethernet cable and then removed the adapter. Everything is working great, but I am at a loss for what to do from here.

Seems your wifi connection either is operating on the edge of its usable range or some other device such as an intruder alarm system is causing radio interference. Short of moving the PC to a location with a usable signal you may have to invest in a pair of homeplug adapters, also known as POE adapters. These use your mains electricity wiring to convey the signal to anywhere in the house and are very effective (i've been using them for about five years). But you could first see if you can access your router's configuration screens and change the wireless channel by at least 3. Hopefully you got a CD or manual with the router which tells you how to do that.
