My desktop have a big monitor and I'm able to connect my laptop to it but the problem is I would be using a lot of energy and stuff. Is there a way I can close the laptop or what ever and just use the desktop but with laptop turned on?

I'm not totally sure, but I think you need to have both the computer and the laptop turned on at the same time. I know you do if you connect another computer to a computer, and the same with an external hard drive.

1. We need better specs. your is rather short.
2. Are you connecting the Monitor with a Y cable?
3. Laptops have a control to switch Monitors. switch it off on the laptop and back to normal.
3. That leaves the Laptop on - working -
4. That allows you to switch the Desktop back to #1 Monitor. and use it.

DU what else your problem is ... simply as switch using the appropiate methods via you computers. That is if your using a Y Cable for the Monitor.

What is the purpose of connecting the laptop to the big monitor, if you are not using the laptop with the big monitor ?

There are Y VGA monitor splitter cables available ;)

Yes You can do this. Someone will even tell you how once you provide detailed system specs or your Dell service tag.

Switching the Video Image From Your Computer Display To a Projector

When you start the computer with an external device (such as an external monitor or projector) attached and turned on, the image may appear on either the computer display or the external device.

Press <Fn><F8> to switch the video image between the display only, the external device only, or the display and the external device simultaneously.
