Connecting to a Xbox 360 woes

Hey guys,

Not entirly sure if this is the right form but I will give it a try.

I have a PC with windows 7 enterprise x64 connected wirelessly to my router. My Xbox 360 is connected via a wire (PC is in another room from the router and Xbox TV etc)

I have tried and tried to connect the two of them together without any luck. The closest I have gotten is when doing a connection check on the Xbox. I test it and after 5-10 mins the computer shows up on the list but still wont connect (like a connection time out or something)

On the PC I can see the xbox and open up media sharing and the likes but with those settings correct it looks like it should work.

So I thought it was my router. I updated my XP notebook (connected wirelessly) with this new "Windows Media Connect" thing and low and behold the xbox is listed. I then go and open up the sharing and everything on the xbox works perfectly....

Right now I am at a loss... The XP laptop is working over the same network as the PC but the PC just wont connect (xbox side)

Do you guys think I am missing something... maybe some services (I have windows media sharing enabled in the servies)???

We've been seeing quite a few questions about xbox and W7 connections.

Are you bridging the connection between the xbox and PC or running ICS? Some have had better luck bridging vs ICS.

Another item to look at are drivers for the ethernet NIC. You may also want to disable IPV6. If you're not using Homegroups you don't need it. It tends to get in the way.

does that mhen you have two NIC adapters... forintance

NIC 1) 192.168.2.1

NIC 2) 10.1.1.1

YOu can actually go on any network that is on the 192 and talk to a computer on the 10.1.1.1 network correct and vice versa

Not quite.

When you bridge, the NIC's are connected together as one network. The PC just acts as a passthrough. IP addressing would come from the router.

ICS acts as a router with DHCP and NAT. Each NIC is a separate network with different IP subnets.

I thought that is what the SUBNET did... was to combine them together.



Seriously if i was going to hook up a xbox, i would make sure that was hard wired. Is that what he said?

What issues is he having, just not getting a internet connection?

Bridging in essence makes the PC into a kind of ethernet "switch" for lack of a better description. No ICS, No DHCP, No routing, No NAT. It's transparent.

Subnetting is usually used to split IP networks into smaller chunks. Each being unique. In order for one IP network to talk to another, you need the services of a router.

Now that I think more on what he has, it may be the xbox is wired to the router and the PC is wireless. If that's the case, throw out my questions about NIC cards and ICS/Bridging...

The OP's post isn't 100% clear if the wire connection he mentions is connecting to the LAN port on the laptop or the router, but I assume router. I had the issue where I would go to the Music or Video section on the 360 and I could see my old laptop just fine but my new Win7 laptop wouldn't show, though I could see the Xbox from the laptop. What fixed mine was to shut down the 360, I went to Media streaming options, selected All Networks, removed everything from the list. Make sure the default settings allow full control and everything, stop the Windows Media Network service, then browse to C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player and delete everything here. Start the WMPNetwork service again then open Windows Media Player and let it rebuild the database. Then power the 360 up and see if you can browse.

Also, have you tried disabling any firewall on the PC or antivirus?

I can get your network connected to the xbox and make sure it gets connectivity but configuring the xbox is another thing... I may have to buy one.

I have a ps3 that takes care of all my stuff. I use ps3 media server java style! That thing is a pain all by it self

Sounds like AP Protection. On My router, this option, when enabled, prevents network devices from talking to each other (but they can still see each other). Check your router for a similar option. Better yet, post your router brand and model number, and I'll help you research. Also, if you use Xbox live, make sure you either place your 360 into the DMZ (De-Militarized Zone... it means the on board firewall is completely bypassed by the device... DO NOT PLACE A COMPUTER IN THE DMZ, people outside your network could gain access to your pc) or correctly forward all the ports listed in the online help which is found under support @ (www.xbox.come/live).

I just use DMZ for the 360 since if someone can hack that thing, they'd be doing us all a favor. No damage has been done to my network yet, 3 people have already tried and got stomped. I am aware, however of rumors about bouncing traffic off of the 360 to accomplish other tasks (such as accessing network files), but have not encountered anything outside of lag generated to cheat on halo.

Thanks for the replies... to answer a few questions...

Xbox is wired to the router to there is not bridging the connection to my PC... PC(win7) is wireless as my laptop(XP)... All on the same subnet... All on the same router... Laptop(XP) connects to the xbox just fine... PC(win7) does not?

Thats where the problem lies... It has to be something on the windows 7 side like something firewall ish that is timing out the connection.

To add I did try to disable the firewall with 7 and it did not work and I did enable sharing to the xbox (which was detected by the 7 so their is a degree of connectivity
