simrick, I may suggest, if you are still running stable just let it run that way. My philosophy is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I may very well have been one of the programs you uninstalled. Well, I managed to finish the recovery disks - amazing! and then as I came here to answer you it blue-screened again. So....anyway, on the reboot, I had scheduled a chkdsk, but, guess what? It got to the part where it says a check has been scheduled, press any key to abort. Well, I did nothing because I wanted a chkdsk to run, and guess what it did? It decided it didn't want to run a check and booted into windows anyway! LOL go figure...............

Look at this one and see. I think this is the one. You don't need the F6flpy. That is for installing it during a clean install. You may want to get it and save it in case. I ran the IRST and selected "fix" (the only other option was uninstall). No change. Installed Seatools for Windows, ran the short generic test on both drives, and they both passed. All this in-between blue screens....Next? LOL

EDIT: added photos. Absolutely can not get a chkdsk to run. Tried even in safe mode with command prompt. It can run in read only mode, without the /f in safe mode with command prompt, that's it. The read only mode showed no errors/no bad sectors.

Have you run the Long test with Seatools? Try it just on the Mechanical drive. I honestly have no idea why it won't run Check Disk, unless it is because it is in Raid mode.


We can try Driver Verifier if you would like to. There is always the possibility of having to do a clean Install if doesn't work right. But, we take every precaution for that not to happen. Just be sure to create a restore point before enabling it.
You remember the Video I did on Driver Verifier in Windows 10. It is the same in Windows 7. Just sort the drivers by Provider and enable it on all Non Microsoft drivers.

I uninstalled the IRST non-critical components (User Interface, Event Monitor Service, program shortcuts). I will run the Seatools long test on the spinner now. In the meantime, I have not read this yet, but perhaps you could give it a read and let me know what you think? It's the procedure on how to reconfigure the system so that it uses the native OS software to manage the HDD controllers - available when I did the uninstall. Thanks!

I'm not sure the procedure applies to you. While, your system is in Raid to enable Intel Rapid Start, the article pertains mostly to systems in Raid 0, which you are not. I have never used Rapid Start before, but give me some time and I will see if I can get some information to help you disable it. I would leave Rapid Storage there, for now. Once we disable rapid start and are able to boot, rolling back to the Windows controller is pretty easy.

I know the Rapid Start can be disabled in the BIOS - I did it once already. Maybe if I do it again, and then uninstall the drivers.....I will wait to hear from you!

On boot up do you get an option ROM message before the Dell Start screen? I think you should. What I would like you to do is when you see the option rom message quickly press Control+I. It should take you to the Raid Configuration settings. This is where you enable or disable Raid. I don't want you to change anything, just tell me what the Raid configuration is.

I don't see how you could be in any type of true Raid mode. I don't believe that is your issue. Also, am I correct that in Explorer, you cannot 'see' the SSD?

Before trying it, make sure you have a good image of the OS. I believe you still have Intel Rapid Storage installed in the OS. Do you still have the Management Console? Once you disable Rapid Start in the BIOS, also change the Sata Controller from Raid to AHCI. IRST has the AHCI Drivers as well as the raid drivers, so that should not be a problem. Save the changes and reboot. Once in the OS, I believe you have to disable Hardware acceleration of the SSD. Then uninstall the Rapid Start program. If you make it through all of that, the rest is easy. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask. You may not need to disable hardware acceleration, but we'll see. My thoughts are, with RST disabled in BIOS and the sata mode set to AHCI and not raid and the RST software in the OS uninstalled, it cannot work anyway.

I do not have a ROM message - it goes straight to the Dell splash screen logo, and I hit F12 and I get options - I can then do advanced options, and there is something available to turn IRST off.

Yes, the drivers are still there, I simply uninstalled the user interface. No, there is no SSD in Explorer.

I don't know if I will be able to install Macrium and make an image - will be very difficult, but I'll give it a try.

No problem, you just had me worried that I had messed you up. It shouldn't though. When you make the changes in BIOS, if it won't boot, you should be able to go back an re enable everything is what I'm counting on.

HA! Well, listen, I only disabled the IRST and then booted, installed Macrium, and now I am attempting to make an image of the entire HDD. If I can somehow, by the grace of God, get that completed, then I will make a recovery ISO, and THEN I will feel much luckier - lucky enough to switch to AHCI and take my chances.......ok?

So, I will be a little while...if you need to call it quits for the night, that's ok by me.

that's fine. I will be around a little longer, but in all honesty, I believe it will work. If you were in a true raid where all data is split across both hard drives, then I am sure it would fail, but you are not. The SSD is only used for a cache, to store the data used most often to speed the hard drive up. There is no splitting of the data, and you still have IRST installed which has the Raid drivers but also has AHCI Drivers. So, I don't see any reason it wouldn't boot. Does that sound logical to you?
