that's fine. I will be around a little longer, but in all honesty, I believe it will work. If you were in a true raid where all data is split across both hard drives, then I am sure it would fail, but you are not. The SSD is only used for a cache, to store the data used most often to speed the hard drive up. There is no splitting of the data, and you still have IRST installed which has the Raid drivers but also has AHCI Drivers. So, I don't see any reason it wouldn't boot. Does that sound logical to you?

Yes, it sounds totally logical, and I'm sure you're right. What a dumb setup. I mean, really! Leave it to Dell to configure it that way and then bork the driver!

I am 26% done with the system image and crossing my fingers. If I get that completed without a BS, I'll cut the rescue disk, make sure it boots, and then change that setting to AHCI.

Okay back again. Here's the update:

Got the image made - don't ask me how, must have been Divine intervention!
Not sure if it got through the verification phase, b/c I went to bed.

Evidently the thing has been blue-screening all night and re-booting on its own.

I got the rescue ISO on the desktop, but not able to keep it on long enough to cut a disk.

I went into the BIOS and changed to AHCI. Rebooted, and it blue-screened so fast I almost didn't notice; went back into boot loop with "Start Windows Normally" or "Repair Options".

Ya know,this thing runs at 50C - does that sound right? Just wondering. I do hear the fan going on and off, and I have it set on a cooling pad.

Laptops ten to run hot. I have an old Pentium laptop running 8.1 and it idles at 50. It's a Dell too and the fan doesn't even run until it gets hotter than 50.

So, what did you do? Is it booting yet? Did you try resetting BIOS and see if it boots?

I have done that - it doesn't help.

But it looks like you have the iRST screen. I believe he had the IRST control panel. He is disabling Acceleration on the SSD and enabling it on the Hard Drive.

Yep, I watched the video after I uploaded the screenshots. That is exactly where I make the changes. So, first I went into the BIOS and toggled IRST, then I made the changes in the RST control panel. Rebooted - seemed like something was definitely happening because it took quite a long time for everything to settle down on the desktop. I am in the OS now, waiting....patiently....LOL

15 minutes and it's still up. WU installed one update - I think it has to do with compatibility for W10. It's waiting for a reboot, but I delayed it for 4 hours.

I have used IRST on every Intel computer I have ever owned and never had a problem with it (knock on wood). However, some people it gives them fits, just like your case. I have absolutely no idea why, unless it could be some sort of software/driver conflict. You may do OK with it if the Rapid Start software is uninstalled. I don't know.

No idea why this is such a problem.

It's been on for one hour now, although that means nothing - it's so random.

I plugged in the external HDD and it's wanting to do a chkdsk on it - not sure if this is related or not - so, if it blue screens during this, will it bork the external HDD?

It could very well. Stopping check disk, once started, can corrupt the data on the drive. You can run it at boot and press a key to stop it from running.
