Solved Constant BSOD from iastorA.sys 0x10~7e or 0x10~7e

no choice now - it's running and it seems to be taking a VERY long time, as if it's stuck or something. CRAP!

Okay it's working, but VERY slowly

Is it slow for a mechanical Hard drive, probably 5400 RPM? The SSD is not being used now and it's too small to put Windows 7 on.

This is the external HDD that it is running the chkdsk on - only 570 files processed in 4 hours,....but, at least no BSOD yet!

Well, it will be a good test for it. It may not be the IRST making it crash, it could be the RST software.

Okay so it had been over 4 hours and only 648 files completed so I clicked the cancel button. I burned the rescue ISO and now I will reboot to make sure it boots the system to Macrium. Then I will reboot into the OS with the external HDD attached and see if it still wants to chkdsk...

Here is something strange. I booted to the Macrium Rescue CD - worked fine, then I booted back into the OS with the ExtHDD attached. It did not ask to chkdsk the extHDD. I looked in Explorer and I could see files in there - just not the files *I* had put in there. I opened a few and they opened fine. So, I ran a chkdsk on it - went really fast. I looked again, and noticed the Macrium image I had made was 0 bytes (I knew something was up, b/c when I booted into the Macrium recovery environment, there was no image found...). The backup I had made of her user files was nowhere to be found either - not even an empty folder. It appears that everything I had made while the system was not functioning properly is gone.

Does that make any sense? I am in process of making a new Macrium image now.

Well, it does in the sense that stopping Check Disk once it has started can corrupt data. If you make a Macrium image now, you could only restore it to the way it is now. If I understand you correctly, it isn't working quite right.

Just to be clear:

Before I started working on this thing, I connected the extHDD, copied the user folder onto it, and then made a macrium image of the entire disk.

Today, after we (aparently) fixed the BSOD problem, I plugged in the extHDD, and the computer wanted to chkdsk it. I let it, and in over 4 hours it had only got through 648 files, so I clicked the cancel button. In File Explorer(Computer) the extHDD showed as unreadable. I rebooted and looked at the extHDD, it was there, and readable. However, the user folder was not there, and the macrium folder was there, but the image was 0 bytes. I ran chkdsk again, it went through really fast this time, gave me a report, and everything seems fine. The only thing is, it seems that everything I put on the external disk before we fixed the IRST issue, is either not there, or empty file.

Why would it do that? Nothing was "Found" from the chkdsk operation. Could it be that anything saved while the computer was unstable just never took? Does that seem like a possible scenario?

My opinion is anything is possible with computers. But, I wouldn't think that. Usually if an error is detected in the hard drive, macrium will abort and tell you there was an error with the hard drive. I've had that happen a couple of times. More than likely is when you aborted the Check Disk, the data was lost. That will happen with check disk, if you abort it. You may check and see if you have a folder named 'Found" on the drive. Check disk will take anything it considers orphaned and put it in a folder named found. Try showing hidden folders. I will tell you how if you need to know, but I suspect you do.

Nope, there is no FOUND folder. And, it seems that all the data she had on there previously is intact - it's ONLY the stuff I added while it was acting up, that is the problem.

I will leave it on today, all day, and see if it blue screens any more, but as of yesterday, it seemed stable.

Will let you know. Again, thanks for your untiring assistance!

Good luck with it. I hope the BSODs are gone. Just let me know, if you would. You are more than welcome for any help I gave, but it was you who did all of the work. It is rather strange about the data you wrote to the external drive. I really don't have an answer for that one.

Okay here's the deal - it was on all day yesterday without issue. This morning I turned it on, set the power options for NEVER shutdown when plugged in, made sure it was plugged in, reserved W10 and left for the MS Store. When I got back it was shutdown. I ran WhoCrashed and the last blue screen was 7-28, so for some reason, it must have just shutdown by itself. I did not get a "Windows has recovered..." error message when I booted it up.

The GWX taskbar white-window-icon is gone, but it did say Windows is Reserved when I went into Windows Update. So, I went online and got the W10 disk creator download from MS, and am upgrading it now. Am I pushing my luck? :sarc:

That's difficult to say, but I would think if you were to clean install it, probably not. But, I did that and did the upgrade with the Media Creation tool and it would not activate for me. I reverted back to 7 and am going to do it with the GWX icon. I think the way it works and would be best for you is do the upgrade, activate it. Then if you have problems, you can clean install it with no problems. I can't say about Windows 10, but normally if you just upgrade, any problems you have before will be carried over. A clean install will get rid of whatever problems you have. I know you said you were trying to avoid that, so I would try the upgrade is my suggestion.

Yes, activation was a little flaky - took several tries, and reboots before it would activate. But it's activated now, and running well, and no BSODs - totally stable. I think we have it solved!

I found out that *all* her data is on the computer, and only *some* of it is on the extHDD, so it's a good thing I didn't have to clean install. This extHDD is nearly full, so she will get a larger extHDD and I will set her up with a complete, automatic backup scheme.

Thanks Essenbe for all your help - I would have never figured that one out on my own! :D

I don't know how old she is, but I put it on my 13 year old Granddaughter's computer. She looked at it for about 2 minutes and had everything changed and set up. I had to ask her how she did it. These kids just look at stuff and understand it instinctively. Me, not too much.

I don't know how old she is, but I put it on my 13 year old Granddaughter's computer. She looked at it for about 2 minutes and had everything changed and set up. I had to ask her how she did it. These kids just look at stuff and understand it instinctively. Me, not too much.

I hear ya! She is my age, so we both have a bit of a learning curve sometimes...my kid, otoh, is like your granddaughter! (and yeah, I have to go to him sometimes for help...I admit it!) :)
