Solved Continuous BSOD after hard shutdown

Hi all,

Probably very dumb on my part, but I did a hard shutdown after a hang-up after waking up my computer. I normally wait and then do a restart since my computer is sometimes very slow after waking. I now get a continuous BSOD, cannot get access to Safe Mode (only Setup and Diagnostics which is running now--no problems detected so far), and I even get the BSOD when trying to boot from my Windows 7 cd.

I don't have access to any dump files of course, but I do remember seeing something about ntfs.sys on the BSOD. I can post the other info from the BSOD after the diagnostics is finished, but is there anything I can do to boot my computer in safe mode at least? I have a Dell Alienware M17x running Windows 7 64 bit.

Do some Disc checks.

1. If there is a SSD, update the firmware.
2. Seatool for dos: SeaTools | Seagate download
   Burn it in a blank cd. boot from the CD, click on "Accept", wait for it to finish detecting the drives, then in the upper left corner select "Basic Tests", then select "Long Test" and let it run.

Don't know if this means anything, but I ran the SeaTools long test and left the house. When I came back I touched the mousepad (as is my habit when returning to my computer, even though the screen was not dark) the top half of the display got funky and the motherboard let out a continuous beep. I didn't know what I was looking at to begin with, and I couldn't read any text since the screen had a corrupted look to it so I rebooted. I'm running the long test again.

Ok ran the long test and passed. Tried to reboot and got the BSOD. The message says ntfs.sys PAGE FAULT IN NON-PAGE AREA. Found some other forums from people with the same problem. No solutions posted but might be a bad HDD. I just had a new HDD installed about 2 months ago and it has worked fine since.

Open up an Elevated Command Prompt. Click on rb: in

type CMD . Right click on CMD under Programs (1) choose

. On the User Access Control window click on the Yes button . Command Prompt opens up to C:\Windows\System32>_

Type the command below

chkdsk /F /R

press [ENTER]

When you type chkdsk /F /R you will get this message

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

When you type " Y " and press [Enter] you get this message below

This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.

C:\Windows\system32>

Restart the PC manually .

When you're back inside Windows. Open up Powershell by clicking on rb: type Powershell inside

and press [ENTER] . Inside the Powershell paste the command below

get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt

and Press [Enter] upload the chkdskresult.txt file

   Note

To Paste inside the Powershell window just press on the right click button on the mouse

I would love to be able to get that far lol. I cannot even get Windows to boot in safe mode. I get the BSOD before I even get the option to hit F8. I get the option to enter setup and startup options, or to start Windows normally or run start up repair. But no matter what I try as soon as Windows starts loading drivers it crashes.

Well I was able to run startup repair. Every diagnostic passed except system restore (error code 0x1f) and system files integrity check and repair (error code 0x490). I was able to open the command prompt and entered chkdsk /f /r as instructed, but I get a different message: "Cannot lock current drive. Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected."

Quick update: prior to my last post I booted my pc with Ubuntu (via a cd) just to grab my most recent files that I didn't back up. It was my first time using Ubuntu so I just selected "Try Ubuntu without installing." After I restarted my computer I was able to run the startup repair, and after my previous post my computer starts up and runs normally now. I haven't the foggiest idea of what happened lol. All I know is I LOVE Ubuntu and I'm going to install it!
