Hello Joe,

Those would be dependant on the installed program and driver instead.

You might be able to if they had a CLSID key that you could find for it at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID, and change the icon in the DefaultIcon key at that location the same way as in the tutorial.

You might even be able to use the program Resource Hacker on their .cpl file usually in the C:\Windows\System32 folder to manually change the icon used.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

That error usually indicates that you are either not the owner or not logged in an administrator account while doing this. Did you take ownership of the {f2DDFC82--8F12-4CDD-B7DC-D4FE1425AAD} key before trying to set permissions to "Full Control" for your user account?

I only have one user profile. No, I did not take ownership of the key first. I did manage to change the icon after rebooting and logging in under safe mode. Then I applied permissions to both the admin and other user account. Proceeded to then log back on my regular profile & input the data necessary for the icon change. Next time I will have to remember to take ownership =P & one more quick question if you don't mind, I only have one account. Which is an administrative account, modifing the permissions should not have been an issue right?

It's no problem. I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted.

Yeah, even while logged in as an administrator (unless it's the built-in Administrator account), you would still have to take ownership first (steps 5-7) before setting permissions (step 8) as outlined in the tutorial. ;)
