Does it do the same thing in safemode? Definatly something to try. Have you any system mods that are extra other than what windows installs? :)

tezlewis in Safe Mode is doing the same. I have installed on my laptop only Googe Chrome and Office 2007. That's it.

Has it always done this, or did this just start happening?

It's just happening. The OS is newly installed: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate x84 Integrated July 2010 OEM

One thing I've come across in the past is that a corrupt .CPL file can also cause explorer.exe to crash if you try to open the control panel. Its a right pain finding the culprit, though, since you have to delete and replace each file one-by-one.

If you go into your System32 folder and arrange your files by type you can group all the .CPL files together. Then by double-clicking on each one you may come lucky and find a corrupt .CPL file(s).

Have you very recently (just before this started) installed Java?

No, Java is not installed on my notebook.

You can try doing a system restore to a point before the problem started happening and see if it clears it up ... you can also run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt to check the integrity of the windows core files...
