Cooling fan on HP laptop behaving strangely

Hi All, I've got an HP 2560p Win 7. When I turn the power on the cooling fan switches to lo speed and stays there. When I power off the fan turns on hi speed and stays there. In both cases the battery is in and its getting plug power. Removing the battery makes no difference. Removing battery and unplugging causes the fan to finally go off. I spoke to HP support they said update the bios. I did and it nothing changed; problem remains as before. Laptop is 1.5 yrs old and the problem started about 5 days ago. Up until then the fan was working normally. Any ideas how to fix this? I did some google searches and didn't find and relevant solutions. Thanks! Tom

That is correct. The fan only turns off when the power plug is pulled out *and* the battery is removed. OK, thanks! We'll try this. I didn't know about this feature in Windows. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Cheers, -Advait

Now Advait if this doesn't work then it appears to me that the power button is sticking down. Now I don't know how you feel about fixing things but try keeping it plugged in with the fan running and with the tip of a small pointed knife gently try to ease that power on button out - if this switches off the fan then there is your problem.

To rectify you can take it to a dealer or do it yourself I found this video whee it shows how to get to that switch with a bit of luck you may be able to free it up a little enough for it to work normally. You can do that by once freely moving apply a tiny touch of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around the edges but only the tiniest of amounts.

Excellent. Thanks! I know a good hardware guy who may have the skills to try what you suggest (I just have to see if he has the time). I'm not that skilled with in-depth hardware repairs. I'll post updates. Cheers, Advait

Ok mate thats good to know I think that top cover will come off reasonably easily but if unsure then of course let someone experienced do it

HP Laptops doesn't have a good ventilation system, glad you fixed it!
