Asus G73 notebook, FN key behaving strangely

My roommate just got his new Asus G73 notebook (i7 Lynnfield, 6GB ram, Radeon Mobility 5870 1GB, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64). The problem he's having is with the function key. It's working for a few functions, such as screen brightness, screen on/off, wifi on/off, and suspend. These are the only working keys on the F1-F12 keys...volume control, mute, and the keyboard backlight remain unresponsive.

It's strange though, the FN key works for certain other keys on the keyboard, such as the page up/down keys located on the '9' and '6' of the numpad, but the calculator function (located on the numpad 'enter' key) does not work, nor do the media controls (pause, next/back, stop) work, which are located on the arrow keys.

It appears that pressing FN does something, however, as if I hold FN and press F11 in a browser, it will not go into fullscreen mode as it normally should - just nothing happens (F11 should 'mute' the speakers when functioning properly).

The keyboard drivers are the latest offered from the Asus website, and Windows is entirely up to date.

Anyone have any ideas here?
