Copy and Replace functionality

When copying a file to a folder in which there is already a file with the same name, you get three options:

1. overwrite
2. cancel
3. copy the intended file but with a rename (file (2).xxx)

What is usually needed is to copy the file and rename the existing file in the destination folder.
Is this possible and how?

Click cancel and then rename the existing file and then copy the new file to the folder.

I was hoping for an automatic solution (like the default one, only that works on the opposite direction).

Please read the rules before posting. If there's already one around that does what you want one of the programmer's there may know about it and provide a link.

Also sourceforge.net and softpedia.com are good freeware sites to check.. along with snapfiles.com etc..

These are command line tools to copy and move files with the VMS versioning simulated. You may be able to set them as target for an Explorer context menu command. i think drag and drop hooking my require a DLL but perhaps not.

VMS file system when you saved a file in an editor that already exists, or copied a file over another the target was automatically renamed ;1 ;2 ;3 etc... These tools simulate that with changes to make them Windows compatible.
