I've been reading this thread, and it makes me so angry. People sell "keys" like water. Does the "4" mean s/he can get grace periods 4 times?

NewEgg is honest. Last time I looked, a few months ago, MicroCenter was selling keys + disc too.

Just checking before I activate MY new Win7 install. I know from XP that legit keys were randomly called illegit.

Microsoft officially stopped issuing keys for windows at the end of support [ it is normal to not supply them during the extended support period ]

These days your best chance is the very large or the very small retail outlets, the large ones always kept huge stocks so may have some left although the price will have multiplied several times through supply and demand. Retail keys will be almost impossible to obtain so OEM keys are the best bet. The smaller "Mom & Pop" electrical / stores may also have a shrink wrapped disk set with key, left gathering dust, Don't even consider a key only ... these were never sold or provided in this way, except to specialist Technet/MSDN which are not useable except by the original owners.

Forget Ebay, you have a better chance of winning a national lottery than finding a legit copy there.

Last option would be to purchase a second hand copy from a private individual that has the original documentation and disk etc, [of course this key may look perfect but will have been used for upgrading, and thus unusable]

2 places I trust are MicroCenter and Newegg. Last price I saw was $140.

Nigel--is Fry's a reliable place? I've never dealt with them.I see they also sell mattresses and light fixtures.

I don’t know what he did. I just know he was able to boot up Windows without a problem and input a working key.

I don’t know why starting up Windows failed that one time. Sure, Windows booted up fine this morning and didn’t take more than a minute, but I wonder if startup failure could happen again.

It's best not to ask, so you can say "Oh, I didn't know..." if anyone asks you.

Not familiar with that story. I was joking that I scrub my computer of cookies and trackers if I land on one of Google's sites.
