Copying backup files?

I use Macrium to do my backup images to an external 1Tb Hitachi Touro. If I want to create a portable backup, do I have to use the Macrium Image utility to do the backup on a different medium, or can I simply copy the image file from the Touro to the other medium? Thanks for any feedback.

I copy my Macrium Reflect images to new locations all the time without any trouble. In fact I copied one to another folder just about an hour ago and I'm now moving the folder to another drive.

Thanks for your response. My concern was if a restore can be done from a copied backup. Meaning, does the restore(able) backup HAVE to be generated by Macrium, or can it be a simple copy of the backup. I've been following the other thread about internal backups, external backups, and off-site backups, and my question was actually spurred by your post about having multiple backups in off-site locations. I am thinking about getting an inexpensive 250g (or so) USB spinner and just copying images over to it and keeping it in some secure off-site location. Thanks again.

Of course you can do a restore from a copied Macrium Reflect image; I have done so on occasion. I specified Macrium Reflect images because I have seen reports of people having problems with copying and moving images made by Win 7's backup feature.
