Been stressing alot recently about the idle temps of my cpu (new pc case) (when load temps are spot on) after much research and much stress about what turns out to be nothing i found this

IDF Taipei: Intel Releases DTS Specs For All Core 2 Processors

Basically if your idle temps seem high or low then dont worry as they are almost 100% likely to be reporting way off (45nm are the worst)

Just thought id share incase anyone else is spending time worrying about nothing :p

"The digital thermal sensor (DTS) accuracy is in the order of -5°C +10°C around 90°C ; it deteriorates to ±10°C at 50°C. The DTS temperature reading saturates at some temperature below 50°C. Any DTS reading below 50°C should be considered to indicate only a temperature below 50°C and not a specific temperature. External thermal sensor with “BJT” model is required to read thermal diode temperature."
oh and to make matters worrse it seems i have 2 sensors (core0 and core3) that are absolutely and completely stuck..........it just gets better and better :sarc:

lol, I wouldn't worry about it mate. My Q9550 has 3 completely stuck idle sensors and the last one is a bit 'iffy'.

As long as it shows movement at load, you're fine :)

lol, I know the feeling mate.

I was obsessed with my 9550's temps initially when it was my main machine. I was alarmed at the disparity of the idle core temps until I discovered the flaky sensor issues.

These temps are fine for the system builder who pay attention to there CPU temps every check some of these small E-machines and the like I had one customer who has a HP with a 3 gig AMD that is up over 50c all the time at idle and he games with it and the card runs over 70c at idle so how long will systems like this last before having error or overheating because they are so small of cases and they have one fan for exhaust just a observation. Took a stop at the local computer repair shop and that is all he has in his shop those little cases.

With some AMD processors the reasdings seem to be completely off. I got readings of 8C in an ambiant temperature of 30C on an AMD 4800+.

I recently changed out a E6750 for E8400. I also went from stock intel heatsink to Tuniq Tower 120 with AS5.

On auto-voltage, my idle temps were 39C and only rose to 43C stressed in Orthos. I saw the voltage climb to 1.3 or so in HWMonitor.
When I turned the voltage all the way down in the BIOS (1.1v) the cores do not move past 39C at 100% load in Orthos.

Using RealTemp, CoreTemp, HWMonitor, CPU-Z. Same results.

Should I be concerned?

Edit: I'm not sure if my system specs are in my profile. The filter at work gets angry with the Xbox 360 gamertag module and I'd rather not set it off.

Motherboard: Asus P5K-Deluxe WiFi/AP

nope those temps are more than fine , although ignore your idle temps they are most likely wrong , as reported the slope error is huge when the cpu is not under load , trust (and worry) only about your load temps and yours seem unusually low but as its not overclocked that maybe normal

run prime 95 and select small ffts to test full load temps , or if you really want to see how hot your cpu can get get intel burn test and run that 5 passes on high ;)

I have a E6750 and E8400 and the sensor check on the 6750 run both the same number but the 8400 the one core is 3 number off (6--- 3 ) compared to the other core running sensor check from within Real Temp idles at 38c and 30c with one window open and Media Center running case temp is 24c. I was going to sent it back to Newegg.com but decided to keep it when I found out a lot of these chips have sensor issues.

This is why I always say, ignore the idle temps.

If your loads temps are good under Prime, then all is OK.

Chances the idle temps arent accurate are quite good, and do not matter anyway in the grand scheme of things :)

You may see 40C on 1 core for example, but in reality is only 30-32.

yeah Intel wont rma any chip with sensor issues , they say they fit sensors purely to throttle the cpu when it reaches its TJ max , they were never meant to be used as temp monitors.

After reading through the real temp forums it seems intel also set a differant tj max for each pair of cores for example core 0 and 1 may have a tj max of 100 degrees and core 2 and 3 105 degrees reducing the risk of any cpu shutting down completely (this is not info from intel but from various hardcore testers who fit their own sensors and monitoring gear and test the chips to within an inch of their lives

The strange thing is that my Q9650 use to have a stuck sensor "wouldn't go below 45C" which somehow unstuck itself after an extended overclock testing session.
