Before you attempt to help me, I ask that you please refrain from replying with 5 pages of "GET 1.6 and/or SOURCE" because I have source and I hate it, that's why I'm trying to play 1.5.

So, I've successfully installed both Counter Strike 1.5 and Day of Defeat 1.0 and have gotten them to run in compatibility mode...

...my problem is, that in both CS and DoD whenever I start a game it reverts all of my options and controls to the default settings. I've reinstalled and done everything I can think of to try and fix it (i've tried my legit retail copy of cs as well as downloaded versions and my roommates' copies) and nothing seems to work.

any help would be greatly apreeshed.

I'm running Windows 7 RC (7100) 64
and all of my drivers are up to date.

thanks

Ok I would try going in to the folder and manually editing the config files for cs1.5 and see if this helps. Im just guessing on this cause I have 1.6 and source, but it sounds like its not writing the changes in those files. I wish i was at my machine with cs on it to tell you the name of the files to open with a text editor, my guess is something like "config.con" for "default.con"
I would make a copy of the folder before editing anything that way you can overwrite the orginail if the games does not boot after your changes you can go back to the orginail files.
Let me know if this helps.

^^ ditto what Dark said. check your config files and make sure they're not set to read-only.

Also make sure you run the game with administrator rights that will give the program the ablities to change its files.

This. That's the actual problem. If a software doesn't have the rights it will either :
1. Won't do anything.
2. Write to C:\Users\*name*\AppData\Roaming\*etc.*

Several other games that were programmed for XP (which doesn't have those Admin right by default), like StepMania 3.9/4, that needs to write to their install folder will either FAIL or write to AppData (the admin rights denial will redirect them each time there).

That said, like DarkZeno said, try running while being an admin. It will solve many many many things.
