Hi all,

Ive got a HP pavilion dm1 with 4bg ram but for some reason the cpu is always running at 100% which means it takes forever to get anything done. I cant remember when this started exactly but has been increasing over time.

Ive got so many services running and I dont know what they all are, I need to kill loads but dont know where to start. I think a lot of my problems might be from selecting loads of check boxes (somewhere) for windows settings when I was creating applications in Visual Stuido 2010.

As Ive not used it for sometime (VS10) Ive just uninstalled it which took hours, and now removing SQL Server (also taking forever!)

I was just wondering if there was a way to set my Windows 7 back to basic settings to try and kill all these services Ive got going, preferably without having to do a fresh reinstall. I know I could probably go through each service/process thats running to find out if I need it or not... but I just dont have that kind of time, or desire.

I dont think Ive got any unwelcome botnets running in the background or anything, but I wouldnt put money on it. My AV is sophus, using the local councils membership, courtesy of my friend who works there, so think its pretty secure.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I'm pretty sure it is only one item causing the issue,
Go to windows update and change settings,
User Never check for updates
Save and restart the machine.

OK thanks, I'll try that now.

I think I used to have auto updates disabled on my main PC a while ago which did improve performance. But I then learned quite a lot about hacking techniques and decided to keep things up to date.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi,
Yep setting to Never check for updates is to calm the system down
After which you can try this

Make sure and go to Uninstall a program and see which Microsoft Net framework you have installed,
4.5.2 is the most consistent to have installed,
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42642

You can try and install the newest update client manually leave your update settings at Never check for updates until you install this,
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

Then download this to your downloads folder to run it from there,
https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS16-039?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

Download the x86 for 32 bit system or x64 for a 64 bit system

Install it and restart when prompted too after it does a stand alone search for updates which shouldn't take too long it took all of 5 seconds "If" the windows update settings are switched to Never check for updates before running it from the downloads folder.

Once it installs and restarts
You can reset your updates setting to whatever you had prior = Default....
Then manually check for updates.

Ive got .Net 4.6.1 installed but was thinking of uninstalling all that as well. Do I need the .net framework if Im not developing any asp / windows based application? Im not doing much developing at all at the moment, if anything Im using WordPress. And WAMP server.

What exactly are all the other steps for?

Ive turned auto updates off and to check for updates and notify me when any important updates are available, and I'll decide whether to (manually) install or not. Is that not enough?

Thanks for your help

Hi,
The rest of the steps are to get the last round of updates
I prefer net 4.5.2
A lot of games and some programs need net framework 4 at least 4.5.2 is just for good measure
I'm starting to believe it is necessary for the update system to interact with M$ updates servers ?

I do have net 4.6.1 on 2 64 bit systems and don't have any issues with it = yet but if I doit will be the first this to uninstall and reinstall net 4.5.2.
