Crashes/Bluescreens for a year, no solution found

I'll try to keep this problem short, it dates back about a year when i had my XP OS which started randomly bluescreening while in gameplay, and only in gameplay. Made me think that its my gfx so i RMA:d my card(radeon 9800 pro), got back a xfx gtx260, didn't help, so i thought that maybe they sent me a broken card, so i rmad again, and got a xfx gtx275 which is currently in. Upgraded to Windows 7 at some point. Also got a new motherboard from my supplier for testing, doesn't work. (P5N-T Deluxe To -> P5QNT XYZ(Currently in))

Short description of how the crash happens:

Sound scrambles, loops slightly.
Fps drops to solid 0. Forcing me to reboot manually, bluescreen RARELY occurs in the actual crash, however after booting the computer i quite often get massive artifaction on BIOS screen.

After the crash the system is very sensitive even if no artifaction is present at boot, meaning the instant i start a 3d accelerated program the system halts.

Steps i've taken along the way:

Replaced Graphics Card for 2 Times.
Replaced motherboard.
Formated and fresh installed Win7 roughly 5 times(each after anything changed in the hardware)
Tested my memory(through the night, no errors), my processor(OK) and my HD(Ok)
Tried every alternate driver for every software/hardware i use.

Most common event viewer errors:

1101 Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0
Source: EventLog

This happens fairly often right before the crash
------------
So i finally managed to get a bluescreen(for the minidump), however it didn't come from while playing a game, but on boot to windows. I received bunch of stuff in the eventmanager that i haven't seen before/in a while. Theres too many of them to post each here so i'll post the ones that seem most important. (Bear in mind i have a Finnish Win7 so ill try to keep them simple.)

Ruoja,

the bsod was apparently caused by the nvidia graphics driver. But more importantly, it was a TDR fault. TDR stands for Timeout Detection and Recovery. Its a process through which windows tries to detect problematic hang situations and recover the desktop dynamically i.e. without reboot by resetting the GPU and re-initializing the video driver. That is why the system appears frozen and the user reboots to resolve.

As the FPS decreases, the likelihood of the GPU resetting increases. I noticed your FPS drops to zero.

But the TDR fault may be happening for other reasons e.g. overheating GPU, insufficient system cooling, overclocking, basically whatever you can think of. Many people have resolved their TDR problems simply by increasing fan speed.

There are some informative pages. pl. go through them.

Fixed my TDR - display driver stopped working - issues - NVIDIA Forums

You can also consider upgrading RAM to the max your system supports. Its cheap.

Thanks for the reply,

Updated the driver, zipped the infos

Also, i know the minidump is a loner, thats one of the problems since i can't get it to BSOD reliably and i just formated my comp when i installed the new motherboard.

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for double post.

Yeah i am aware if fps drops to 0 TDR might think the graphics card has malfunctioned and will try to reset, however this is not the case for no game can drop my normal fps under 40. I don't believe they'd send me 2 malfunctioning cards from RMA so thats why i'm here. Beyond my skill level.

I tried the cooling, used multiple monitoring software, even installed 2 new fans for the gtx260 but heat is not the problem, regardless of heat the crash will occur sooner or later.

Also nothing is OC:d everything is as default as it can be right now.

Hi -

Thanks for the files.

Update your Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet driver -
Code:
[FONT=lucida console]L1E62x64.sys Thu Jun 11 02:45:22 2009 (4A30A802) - Atheros Ethernet[/FONT]

Atheros Driver downloads --> Atheros Communications

I see manually configured page file with min/ max = 2047/ 3040

Boot into safemode, turn virtual memory = OFF. Re-boot into safemode again and delete page file. RIGHT-click on c:\pagefile.sys, hold down SHIFT key while clicking on 'delete'. This will bypass recycle bin. Then set page file to system managed, OS drive. Re-boot into normal Windows.

To help speed the BSOD process up, verify all 3rd party drivers.

Run --> DRIVER VERIFIER - Windows 7 & Vista

My apologies for not completing the bugcheck info in my prior post. Bill2 provided info on TDR. I agree with RAM upgrade. You have 2GB installed.

The bugcheck was in fact 0x117 = video TDR timeout

I checked WERCON out from your files and found four 0x116 "Live Kernel Events", one step below a 0x117 BSOD. The difference between the two is that when a 0x116 occurs, the video driver ultimately recovers; 0x117 it does not, hence the BSOD.

From WERCON, the 0x117 BSOD, the 0x116 Live Kernel Events and a sampling of the 105 Windows Update Failures -

You mentioned change of mobo and you have OEM version Windows 7 x64. Re-validate your OS install at Microsoft WGA site.

Thanks for the reply,

I validated Windows, installed Atheros drivers and some new updates that came after validation.

Running Driver Verifier as we speak, however i did not remember to fix the page file, i hope thats not a problem(its not something thats identical to every fresh install anyway so i doubt it has anything to with the problem).

I find it funny i'm actually hoping for a bsod now ^^.

Thanks for all the effort so far.

Feel free to ask any information related to this matter, i really need the help.

Pretty straight forward. This crash was caused by your video driver. You need to remove all remnants of the current driver (like control panels, etc) before you install a fresh copy.

I believe there is an un-install tool at the Nvidia site.

Let us know if you need help

EDIT. THERE MIGHT BE TWO OTHER THINGS YOU HAVE NOT TRIED

First, it might be a heat issue (download cpu-z, and gpu-z both free) to keep an eye on the temps

Second-- you haven't mentioned your power supply unit. It may not have enough power on the video rail. Check to see how much your card needs, and how much the power supply can deliver on the video rail

Also noticed 2 gigs of ram you may be starving the video card out os shared ram which could make it crash. The problem might be easily cured for ram is inexpensive

Heat issue it is not, however i do have to force the fan on software like EVGA precision, and as said earlier i even tried 2 additional fans on the former gtx260 just to see what it would do, nothing changed on that part.

Power should not be an issue, just bought a new one because i thought it might be a power issue, i can't tell you the model exactly right now but i will check it if you think it might be an issue. However it was bought from my supplier which is also the father of my friend and i trust his judgement on what the sufficient power might be. (ie. it was handpicked for this comp setup)

Ram, you might be on to something, actually you really really might be on to something with that. I will call my supplier for how to best set up the ram in my comp.

Artifaction on bios screen is usually caused by malfunctioning ram is it not?

Hi -

The bugcheck = 0xc4 (0x6,,,) = DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION = referencing user handle as kernel mode. I last saw 0xc4 (0x6,,,) frequently with AVG in late 2009.

NVIDIA was named as the probable cause. However, you have the most recently updated drivers installed -
Code:
[FONT=lucida console]nvBridge.kmd Sat[COLOR=red] Apr 03[/COLOR] 19:50:52 [COLOR=red]2010[/COLOR] (4BB7D45C) - NVIDIA [/FONT]
[FONT=lucida console]nvlddmkm.sys Sat [COLOR=red]Apr 03[/COLOR] 20:06:21 [COLOR=red]2010[/COLOR] (4BB7D7FD) - NVIDIA[/FONT]

Are these NVIDIA beta drivers? I have GeForce 9600M GT and my Windows 7 x64 drivers show timestamp = 3-16-2010, v 8.17.11.9716 - or maybe I am not fully updated! You may want to try roll-back.

Check temps, PSU, RAM, etc... as mentioned by zigzag3143.

Seeing the 105 attempted Windows Updates installation failures from hour 1 of the OS reinstall leads me to believe hardware failure is the problem.

No they are not beta drivers, thats my problem. No matter what drivers i use i still get the same thing. Thats why i've changed like half of my hardware.

I'm lost. Also the update installation failures are really strange as they didn't happen in the earlier fresh installations. Maybe they are caused by the fact that i apparently haven't activated windows, still haven't bothered to do the phone call activation since it seems incapable of activating on the net.

However activated or not the problems persisted on earlier installs as well.

I just wish i could find definite information on which hardware is malfunctioning, i am aware it still might be my graphics card even though i've rma'd it 2 times.

Also i did get the updates eventually done, everytime i got like 3 updates and required to boot, and after that it normally downloaded the ones it gave the error on.

EDIT: I'll keep running driver verifier to see if i can get a BSOD out of Heroes of Newerth, where the majority of the crashes occurred. Global Agenda actually used to run quite stable compared to it. Obviously before DV.

However i played multiple 1 hour games in HoN and nothing seemed to be out of order, it really seems like its running better with DV *grin* Oh and, Reinstalled graphics drivers once again just out of curiosity what it would do with DV on, apparently nothing :)

(Yes i used driversweeper from guru3d in safemode after uninstall and booted twice after install)

After a clean day of gaming and working on my computer, i shut it down normally to find yet again today the bios artifaction and bluescreens on bootup, when the windows logo forms.

I did not get any dumps to show you. God this is killing me!

This came, along with all the errors from my network devices described in post 1.

Allright, i finally got it to crash in heroes of newerth, so hopefully this crash might provide something more specific than the last ones which actually never got ingame before crashing.

Heres the dump, after this if nothing specific comes up ill just rma every piece of my computer again and repeat until solved... :sleepy:

Oh and why i feel good about this one is the fact that it crashed like it normally has crashed, not like DV crashes it. (Even though DV is still on)

This crash was caused by L1E62x64.sys which is either your atheros ethernet driver or a virus of the same name.

You should run a complete virus check and then uninstall the driver and install a fresh copy.

Post the results here and let us know if you need help

Ken

Great, ill do what i can and ill edit this post afterwards. This BSOD seems to show the ACTUAL cause thats been ravaging me for a year, at least hopefully. (I sincerely doubt its a virus because the crashes have been more or less the same ever since they started and i've always had AV and careful about them, not to mention more than a few fresh W7 and XP installations.

Could this be related to my ADSL box, assuming if its not a virus?

Updated: Found multiple sources of this indeed being a cause of BSOD:s in win7 64bit Os:s, however i've only had this specific driver for a few weeks as the motherboard AND chipset changed. Problem however is the same.

What i will do next is, first yet another clean install of W7, and will disable EVERY automatic update. Install HoN and attempt to run it with the earliest possible Graphics Drivers.

If the problem persists

After that i will install a non-integrated network card in the motherboard, install drivers for it and attempt again

If the problem persists and still points to something related to networking, i will replace my ADSL box and or call my ISP support to see if they have any known cases of a specific connection causing BSOD:s.

Will update later on, feel free to contribute anything that might help the cause.

also, do you feel this would be a good way to approach?

Yeah i am aware of that, i'm not exactly how it works but on XP i had to activate by phone every X activations. After i reinstalled 7 for about 3 times it couldn't do that automatically so, but the problem isn't activation itself thats why i haven't bothered because i will do a fresh install real soon again.

Status check:
- Changed the AGP adapter to the video card. (No specific reason, just to try out)
- Installed Windows 7 Fresh on the same HDD as before. (have another HDD waiting if problems are not solved)
- Disabled all updates and WILL NOT update unless needed for the actual testing
Installed more RAM, to 4gb.
- Installed a network card.

Mahdollinen muistivuoto. Sovellus (C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted) (PID: 996) on välittänyt muun kuin NULL-osoittimen etäproseduurikutsulle [out]-parametrille, jolla on merkintä [allocate(all_nodes)]. Parametrit, joilla on merkintä [allocate(all_nodes)], varataan aina uudelleen, ja jos alkuperäinen osoitin sisälsi kelvollisen muistin osoitteen, kyseinen muisti vuodetaan. Possible memory leak. Application (C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted) (PID: 996) transferred other than NULL- pointer to remoteprocedurecall [out]- parameter, which has a mark [allocate(all_nodes)]. Parameters that are marked as [allocate(all_nodes)], will always be rereserved, and if the original pointer included a valid memory address, the memory will be leaked. The call came from a (not sure which word), that has an UUID ({3f31c91e-2545-4b7b-9311-9529e8bffef6}) and procedure number of (20).

These are classified as Warnings, do they point out to anything at all? What is this?

What i will do next:

- Install whatever necessary drivers are needed to run Heroes of Newerth
- Attempt to play it extended periods of time

What i have done so far: (this is the part that i will keep editing)
3.5.2010

Installed Realtek Gigabit network drivers for the card.
Beginning to doubt if anyone actually reads what i'm writing.
Attempted to run HoN with the W7 default drivers (which basically just enable the GPU as a device), and didn't work. Crashed.
Downloaded BETA drivers from Nvidia Site version 197.57, installed them in safemode.
"Stress" testing HoN, running a practice game idle because i'm too tired to play the actual game, 10 minutes so far fine.
Played about 2 hours, some TDR was seen but the game never crashed and it was nothing as severe as normally.

4.5
Continuing to play, uptime 15ish hour.

And crashed, screen flickered, sound stuttered, blackscreen and the monitor reads no signal detected. Maybe ill just burn this piece of crap on my backyard.

Pretty much everything in EventViewer is related to networking, theres dozens and dozens of errors about it. And the occasional GPU stopped working and has recovered.

So, i installed a different HDD and yet another fresh install, updated everything by the book, tried yet a different set of drivers and attempted to run HoN, BSOD occurred.

Dump included, not that it will tell anything anyway except "its a tdr error" and "yes you are getting screwed by xfx sending you 2 malfunctioning cards" as there isn't even a REMOTE possibility this can be caused by the user. I can also bet my wallet on W7 as well.

This will most likely be my last post on the forums so, please make haste with the dump if possible.

And my rage doesn't mean i didn't appreciate everything you've tried this far.
