Create system image does not work with WD Mybook Essential USB 3.0

As I stated above, I have been running system images on this PC with a WD 2.0 External hard drive, with no problems. I have also restored my system from one of the images and it worked fine. That is why I bought the new bigger WD USB 3.0 drive. I thought it would be simple to attach it and run my backup with an image, and be able to save more images, but it bombs when trying to create an image.

tilsonpa,
I've gathered you've been imaging for some time and this should be just another big disk which has become a big pain in the neck.
I understand what's in recovery partitions and it's there as you probably know to reset your system back to factory condition.
Windows imaging can be "fussy" and some people hate it for this reason. It may just be being plain "fussy" with a big disk.

So again can you make Macrium images, verify them then mount and browse. If so this is the pragmatic solution in the short term. There is nothing wrong with Macrium. Will this work for you

I'm sure you're at the "I've had enough" stage while I'm still a bit curious. When you made your old windows images did it image the full Dell Recovery and C: ?

I just bought Acronis software and will use it. With the addon which was free with their current offer, it handles GTP partition style and USB 3.0 devices. It also has incremental image backups which will allow me to have many backups on a 3TB drive. I am in the process of testing it now. I will let you know how good it works.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, but I am going to consider this thread complete.

The issue will be ongoing for others. These are relatively new issues and we'll continue to work with people on them. I doubt that GPT compatability issues will stop with imaging.
I hope you find your issues are resolved.

For the sake of others following the thread Macrium (paid) has GPT addons as well.

Acronis restore did not work with GPT partition style

I had 2 problems with sleep mode, using this software. It wouldn't wake my PC, to run, and my PC would go into sleep mode while it was running. After many conversations with Acronis, and trying everything which did not work, I solved the problem by making my own .bat file which wakes up my pc and changes the power mode to one which has sleep mode set to "never". I have other batch job which run fine and wake the PC when it is time to run, and stops it from going into sleep mode, while it is running.

Even with it's shortcomings, I still considered keeping it but I figured that I had better try the restore to see if it would work. When I tried it, it failed. It said it couldn't read data from the disk "failed a sector 0 of disk 0". In my case, it did not work with a 3.0 USB external disk with GPT format style. Their advertisement says it will. I also talked to an Acronis rep and it also said it would.

I have asked for my money back and will try something else.
