Critical update downloaded but hung on install

Befroe reinstalling your AV, you should first run the cleanup tools for ALL AV's you've ever had installed (including McAfee itself) - this should help reduce the possibility of further problems later.

Well I had already reinstalled the virus scanner before I received your note. Where do I find these "cleanup tools"?

Thanks,

If I understand correctly, running this is going to wipe out McAfee (which I have paid for) and leave me with only Microsoft Security Essentials? Is that safe? Do you guys not use an anti-virus on your computers? I don't trust Microsoft with securing my computer with as many security issues as they have with Windows, Internet Explorer, etc.!!

The choice is yours but be sure you only run one anti virus at one time. I use MSE as million of other people do. If you use McAfee you will probably just start your problem all over again. Your computer your choice.

Any other suggestions? I uninstalled McAfee then ran the McAfee uninstaller at the link you provided. I also uninstalled Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy then installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Apparently somewhere in the process the settings to not check for updates was changed to check and install updates. Update 1 of the 10 installed then all the others failed. Unfortunately stupid me didn't think to take a screenshot of whatever error messages might have been displayed. I rebooted the computer and now I'm back to square 1. Update 1 of 9 will not install. I had to force the computer to reboot into safe mode. I attempted to reboot normally and got the warning to not shut down or unplug the computer until the updates finished installing and it just sat there doing nothing but irritating me. Isn't there some way to delete these updates that downloaded but didn't install? Since they didn't install they aren't available to uninstall.

Thank you,
Jake

Which was teh update that installed? - look in the Update History to find out, and right-click on the first one after that that failed - what error message does it quote in the Details popup?

Please open an Elevated Command prompt, and run the following commands

post the results.

The update that installed was the MSE definitions, which actually uses a different method of installation to other updates, so doesn't count in this case.

OK then kill teh process, then try selecting a single update (not the one that blocks everything) and installing that one only
If that works, then try a few of the others.
Leave teh one we know fails until last.

How do I go about selecting one at a time? When you click update it just starts the process of installing all 9 but doesn't show the individual updates. If I go to update history there isn't an option to run one at a time that I can see.

Forget the previous post. After rerunning Windows Update it gave me access to the individual updates. I went through them one by one starting with the second one on the list. The Windows updates installed. None of the Office 2007 updates would install. I went back and checked the first Windows Cumulative update that had been skipped and it to updated. Now all I'm left with are the Office 2007 updates that won't install.

That sounds as if the problem lies with Office, rather than anything else.
The usual solution for that type of problem is to uninstall Office, run the cleanup tool, and then reinstall it, and update it a few patches at a time (You MUST do manaul check for updates after uninstalling and cleaning Office - this will reset the updates)

How to uninstall or remove Microsoft Office 2007 suites
