Hello,

Great Forums and folks. Thanks for all the previous help.
Sr. citizen now, very, and this is the last thing I need.
Sure doesn't inspire any confidence in our Gov't if they can't prevent this kind of thing.
But, i guess, I have lots of company with this.

Anyway, my PC became infected with this CTB-Locker trojan or virus.
I do use avast and Malware Bytes, but neither apparently stopped it.

So, please, what do I do now ?

Is there some program that I can buy (other than paying these horrible people) that would remove, and even more important, allow me to get at all of my WORD and Excel files, pix, eMails, etc ?

I guess there are three parts to the software i want:

Prevent any new occurrences of
Remove it from my PC, now
And, be able to get at all of my old files.

Read about Spyhunter. will it do ALL of these things ?

Is there a better program to get ?

Any and all thoughts on this would be most appreciated.

BTW: a. I just ordered a new "Smart" TV. Any chance of the software here becoming infected also ?
The TV will only be talking to my Router.

b. And, I have started using an Apple iPad for my eMails and Google searches, etc.
Any chance of this getting corrupted too, or are Apple products, somehow immune ?

Thanks,
Bob

If I switch to an Apple due to Virus ?

Hello,

My PC just became infected with this CTB-Locker virus.
Old PC, and might just dump it.

If I get an Apple PC, would it be able to read my (backed up to another external HD, thank goodness) my backed up
WORD and Excel files ?

I read about "Emulators". What do they do ? Do they work, etc. ?

How come Apple products are, apparently not infected with this ? Are they immune somehow ?

BTW: Using an iPad now for eMails and Google searches, etc.
Any chance of using it for this might corrupt the iPad too ?

Thanks, appreciate the help.
Bob

Hi,
Not sure Apple reads Fat32 format so if the external is formatted to that :/
Not really a default format for a external hdd or internal for windows ntfs
But flash drives are usually fat32 by default.
I'd add Linux can read either though and of course free ;)

Apple products are not immune from malicious software. It's just that up until recent times the market share was too small for hackers to bother with it. But that appears to be changing.

The Mac can read FAT32. But whether or not it will be able to understand the file formats of your backups is another matter.

New Smart Tv and ctb locker trojan; anything to worry about ?

Hello,

Have had the ctb locker trojan on my pc, so am understably a bit gun shy re this.

Just got a new tv with dthe smart hub features

Connects to the internet thru my wireless router, for doing searches, etc.
Apparently you can also download from the internet to tv also.

Any chance that my new tv could also become infected with this ctb locker horror ?
Again, doesnt go thru pc, just picks up mu wireless router.

Thanks,
Bob

Any time you system has a Trojan you have problems. Yes it can infect anything that is hooked to the infected system in any fashion including wifi.

You don't work around infection. You remove them.

Have not heard of a virus 'infecting' a television, however, chances are an Internet connection will make the TV technology vulnerable. It is basically a matter of time...

CTB Locker: Here's What I've Tried

Hello,

Have that CTB Locker problem.
Here's what I've done, so far:

a Ran MalwareBytes. It found two related items, which, apparently, it removed
b. Ran SpyHuner. It found nothing related, other than a bunch, 87, of adv and merchandise tracking
cookies.
c. Ran the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool. It found nothing. Not even what SpyHunter found.

So, perhaps, MalWareBytes actually removed it ?

a. How would I know for sure if it did ?

b.The message from these idiots still comes up on my desktop, and the screen remains Black.

But no timer anymore. Perhaps it has just run down to zero ? Not sure, but don't think so.

So, my 3 main questions now, please:

- how can I tell if this trojan is gone ?
- how can I get rid of their desktop message that is always there ?
- how can I get rid of the Black Desktop ?

Anything else to try ? Other removal programs, besides the 3 I've used, worth running ?

Any other thoughts would be most appreciated.

Thank you,
Bob

Hi, Bob:

I will defer on the specifics to the more qualified forum members re: malware/ransomware removal

But I was just curious -- are all 3 of these posts for the same issue?

http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/367585-ctb-locker-heres-what-ive-tried.html

If so, is there a particular reason why you start a new thread each time, rather than replying to the original one?
(The reason I ask is that doing so makes the story harder to follow.)

Perhaps the forum mod team may collect all of the posts into one thread, to reduce clutter and provide more organized response/advice.

Cheers,

Best Software To Automatically Prevent CTB-Locker Being Installed ?

Hello,

As so often, I think I posted this as a Reply rather than a new message.
Sorry.
Let me try again:
--------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

Will be getting a new PC, and am very worried about getting infected, again, with CTB-Locker.

Is there any general concensus as to what is the best avail. software to automatically prevent it from getting into the PC, in the first place ?

Spyhunter ?
MalwareBytes (the paid version) ?

Or,... ?

Thanks,
B.

Skip Spyhunter. Malwarebyte's Premium is good.
You could also try

CryptoPrevent places policy restrictions on loading points for ransomware (eg.CryptoPrevent), preventing your files from being encrypted

You need to pay attention to what you download and the links you click on. You also need to keep your computer and programs (especially Antivirus) updated! If you use peer2peer..... File-sharing technology is a popular way for users to exchange, or "share," files. However, using this technology makes you susceptible to risks such as infection, attack, or exposure of personal information.

I'd say HitmanPro.Alert 3 if you don't mind a paid product: HitmanPro.Alert - SurfRight
I've been following the development and here's a note why they decided to make their CryptoGuard a paid feature: HitmanPro.Alert Support and Discussion Thread | Page 164 | Wilders Security Forums (includes a comparison between free/paid)

But if you're mainly worried about browsing I recommend taking a look at Sandboxie. Programs running in Sandboxie live in a virtual environment and can't modify anything permanent. The free version is fine.
It's also possible to define what programs are allowed to run in a sandbox, what programs are allowed to access the Internet. Set block or read-only access to drives/folders etc.

If I had to choose only ONE security related product I would choose Sandboxie before my anti-virus and others :p
