Hi,

I just finished my i3 build and am trying to get my Windows 7 Home Premium to install and am not having much success.

First of all, I want to note that I am trying to install from an external DVD-Drive via USB because it's extremely hard to get the Drives out of the old Dell computer. I either have to order new ones, or literally break that case.

Anyways, I've been messing with BIOS settings (mostly SATA config and USB legacy settings) and what not, but no matter what I try (seemingly) I get one of two things to occur:

1) The 'expanding Windows files' sticks on 0%
2) I get the 'Windows Cannot Install Required Files Error'

I'm back on default BIOS settings and am going to listen to you guys, because what ever I do doesn't work

Thanks for all the help in advance!

Sounds more like a destination error than a source error, check the hard drive is configured in the correct mode (IDE/RAID/AHCI) and connected to the first SATA port (labled 0)

It's on SATA 1 and I tried both IDE (the default) and AHCI and no luck.

AHCI + default BIOS gives me - Windows cannot install required files, error code: 0x80070017
IDE + default BIOS gives me the 'Expanding Windows Files' stuck on 0%

Any ideas?

If you fill out the system specs it helps us help you. What drive and what motherboard are you using? It may be that you need to install your sata controller drivers prior to install.

Your problem could be the USB optical drive (although this sounds like an issue I had with SATA drivers) if you have a USB Drive of 4GB or more then try you could try the install from there use THIS GUIDE

If you need the ISO go Official ISO Downloads

Where did you get Win7? The first suspect here is the ISO integrity or Burn. Confirm ISO or download another then burn to DVD using ImgBUrn at 4x speed, or write to flash stick using Universal USB Installer with Win7 in dropdown, boot stick under USB, REmovable or HD although it should autostart on clean HD.

If your HD is used wipe it first of any possible boot sector corruption: SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Wipe the HD if it is used. Then use Step 2.2 in tutorial to define an Active partition to try install.

Next try writing DVD to flash stick using Ultra ISO trial version: On File tab Open DVD, on Bootable tab Select Write Disk Image, Format, Write. Boot under USB, Removable or HD's.
