D drive is full

Hi,
Please can someone explain in very simple terms how to solve my D disk problem.
It is telling me it is full and that back ups are failing! I have opened the D drive to see what files are in it but daren´t delete any as something terrible might happen!
My knowlege of computers is limited to knowing how to plug it in and turn it on!

Physical drive, or partition, your system specifications, and what exactly you're doing on "Drive D"...

You have three choices

1-buy a bigger hard drive (but it too will fill up if you dont do maintenance)
2-stop doing back ups
3- delete the oldest back up (make sure there are more than one)

Might have been easier if you told us how big the drive is etc

The drive is divided into 2 "C"has 212GB and "D" has 70,7GB with only 3GB free space.
I think only back ups go to the D drive,but I really have no idea.
I have in there a file called MediaID.Bin size on disk 4.00KB
SPPmetadata cache 76KB

The back up of "C" will be equal (approximately) in size to the amount of used space on "C". If you have 70 gigs on "C" then its probably one backup


Whats the modification date on the "D" folder and files. (tells you when it was done)

Look at it this way. If the current back is old and the machine is running well, you can delete the old one and make a new backup.

If I may butt in.....
Why play with a 70GB partition for files backup ?
An external hard drive of 1 TB can be had for under $100, and I am quoting Canadian price.
Besides, backing up files to an internal partition is illogical, don't you think ?
What if your computer went kaput ? How would you retreive the backup files ?
Just my 2 cents.

hello man, if you want the simply way to solve this problem then, you go to drve D: and right click on it, and you can see option like general, inside general you will see "Disk cleanup", don't afraid it will not cleanup your disk but you can choose a option like recycle bin, and many other option to clear for to increase your disk space, after doing thing you can simply change or replace your hard-disk heaving your backup..best up luck.

As others have stated, you really should be backing up to an external hard drive because at present you'll lose everything if your current internal hard drive fails.

Have a look at this tutorial, which explains how to use Partition Wizard to alter the partition structure.

In your case, you could easily reduce the size of your C drive to 100GB, and then either create a new partition or extend your D drive to the left to take up the unallocated space.

I think the problem is more scary.It would seem i have folders with files in that call themselves backup but when i open them they are just a dialogue box asking to buy or register for winzip.I I have moved a whole lot to the trash but i am a little nervous of emptying the trash.When I tried to put the next one in there it told me the trash wasnt big enough.The word file bloat has been mentioned.What is it and is it bad!

I would like to re-iterate my initial response.....
Forget about the D drive for files backup.
Buy an external hard drive ( even a 500 GB (cheaper) will last heck a lot longer than 70 GB in your D drive ).
You do that, you won't see " D drive is full " for a LONG time.

To help get over being scared to manage your computer, when you need to do something that you are unsure of, make a System Restore Point. That way if something does go awry, you can undo it. With the space that you have dedicated to backups, with the size of my C: partition, I could only keep two backups at a time, which may be sufficient, but I prefer more than that.

If you sending your file into the trash(recycle bin) then the drive D: maybe the main folder to store so you cannot do anything, it will not be empty the better idea is you can buy external drive and backup the files there and you can filter your data and again paste inside the folder or you can store your recyclebin into the C: it may help to manage.
