Hello,

I've recently installed a new HDD, and my previous had Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. When I installed Win7 on this HDD, it asked me for the product key. I seem to have misplaced said key, and tried to find my key via finders, etc. I found one that is in the finder and the CD file, but it gives me an error that states my key is a default key that cannot be used for activation.
I've also noticed that it says 2 Days until Automatic Activation. What is this, and will it activate Windows 7 automatically?

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

If you used a keyfinder on the new installation all it finds is the default key provided until you activate.

If possible you should plug back in the old HD to boot Win7 and audit the Product Key with Belarc Advisor.

If this is not possible then I would look for the packaging which should contain the retail key. If Win7 came preinstalled the COA sticker should be attached to machine. Either way one should back up the key to preserve it's value.

The Default Key can NEVER be activated - it is blocked from activation at the MS servers.
If your machine came with Windows pre-installed (or you used an OEM System Builder pack), then your Key should be on the COA sticker on the case.
If you used a Full Retail pack for the install, the Key should be on a card inside the DVD case.
If you bought the pack from the MS Store, then you should have an email from them with the Key in it, or you can log back in to your MS Store account using the same LiveID you used for the purchase, and get it from there.
