Define a gaming rig

I'm curious as to what people think a low/mid/high end gaming rig consists of these days.

X79 based? 1155 acceptable? CPU? GPU/S? Monitor/s? Old tech automatic demotion?


So what do you guys think makes a gaming PC?


For example - Not bragging - what would you say my sig rig is? MID Range, MID-HIGH, HIGH?

Because of the 3rd card and 3 monitors, I'd say my rig is Mid-High. Agree, disagree?


(I'm talking about realistic PC's too. The ones we play on. Not some $20,000 silly thing. )

But for full on high end, I consider x79 watercooled, quad sli, 30" screens and GTX Titans the be all

Any PC built with the intention of playing games first and foremost makes it a gaming rig. Right now, very few, if any, games require a 6 core CPU to keep things going, and socket 1155 is the best option as far as price vs performance. To answer your question........you have to realize your system to many would be an ultra-high uber gaming rig. Without some sort of cap, one can't rate a machine. Initially, I'd say a mid-high range system because there ARE faster/better performing video cards out there. Take it with a grain of salt because I've yet to install a video card in my system! lol

My rig is still high middle.

kbrady, why oh why bother with all those components and go on-board video, I am very by that....

A new A10 AMD comes with a Radeon HD 7660 on board, that would be pretty sweet budget rig starter, right there.

I just noticed OP is trying to pretend his gaming rig is not high end with 3 670 video cards in it, NICE TRY!

Basically my rig runs every game wonderfully I have bought, otherwise I'd have a FX8350 to add, but it's not needed, at this time, to be fair, the top end video card Radeon HD 7950 is the major reason why, indeed.
My previous 5850 would probably be tolerable still, but I was a little greedy this upgrade round.

I have watched Logan's video and his seems to be the exception, not the rule. The 3570K I have IS more powerful than the FX 8350 as I do more than game....in fact, I put off buying a dedicated graphics card because I don't do much gaming and the games I do play, the HD4000 graphics do just fine @ 1080p. Frown all you want, but this isn't my first day with a computer and I know what I'm doing lol. I chose to spend my money where it was needed.......and I will get a graphics card soon enough.

Well, the FX-8350 is the best priced CPU hands down at the moment, AMD's pricing is kinda puzzling, I dunno whose buying the inferior ones, now that they are so close in price.

8 cores is nice, I am using my 6, I run Coretemp with the gadget, and keep my eye on them, sometimes.

I can upgrade but don't need it and don't want the hassles, although for sub $200 I am so tempted.

Woof... I would probably make 2 or 3 rigs with your rig. Now, let me understand something... do you play on all those 3 screens at the same time or I am reading all these wrong? :shock:

As kbrady has already stated, a "gaming rig" is any computer that is built / bought for the intention of gaming. Now weather it is a low, mid or high end gaming computer would all be personal preference, depending on what games you play. Technically, I could buy a $100 computer and play nothing but Solitaire on it and it would be a high end gaming rig (to me) because I would be able to play Solitaire with to problems and maxed out settings. Just like hoe I consider my current rig a high end gaming computer because I can play all my games on maxed out settings with no problems at all.

See your rig to me would not be high end, it would be to the point where it is complete overkill, because I would never need that much power. Now your rig may not be overkill to you but simply high end, again depending on what you do and how you use it.

I can see how it could appear that way, but if you knew me better mate you'd know I don't play that game

I'm pragmatic. I realize my rig is an uber rig compared to many, but it's still mid-high compared to others. I don't deny I'm proud of it however. I've already said I love my setup and have been complemented on it - I don't need 'sneak' compliments. No pretense here

To slip into the high category I'd expect a watercooled X79 system with 3-4 GTX titans in SLI, x3 30" screens, all max capacity SSD's etc

Compared to a system like that, mine doesn't hold up.


I'm simply asking what others consider to be a high end rig since opinions vary.

Lol. I don't have debt or kids and do flap all else - that's the only way I've managed to build my machine. I will let this rig run through a few more generations I think.

Yep. It's called surround for nvidia and Eyefinity for AMD. Some games I stick to single screen for performance reasons, but most others I game at 5760x1200 so it's pretty resource demanding. That's why I decided on a third card. Cheaper than two new 780's etc.

Tbh, I could actually do with more power solely because of surround. For single screen, it is massive overkill.

I don't do as much gaming as I used to, and believe it or not, I've played CoD: MW3, Diablo III, Dishonored, War Thunder and now Neverwinter all @ 1080p with medium-high settings on OC'd HD 4000 graphics. Until I find a game I HAVE to play that I can't, I'm going to hold off and put the money where it's needed.

And if you go with a Haswell upgrade, the IGPU will do even more

I believe it I've tested out the iGPU on my chip and was quite surprised with it's performance on certain titles.

And after some further thought, I've decided that for this site and quite a few others - mines a high end rig. I guess adding a third card, despite other specs, does put it into a different category. I figured that since I bought a large PSU and a 4 slot mobo with the intent of one day adding 3 cards, I'd be sillier not too.

That is one of the reasons I like AMD they may not beat Intel down like most people want but learning how to tune there chips for optimal performance is very fun and educational

I spent maybe the last 3 years reading about how to fine tune AMD architecture most people think just throwing the multi up and some voltage at it is all they need it goes much more deeper then one can imagine

But on the flip side of things I have seen a lot of people swaying AMD's way im not sure if it really is budget or they really caught on to something with this 8core cpu because this thing has some balls and I can say even on a bad server this thing keeps me smooth in game

Well my phone plays a mean game of Lane Splitter



It has a 1 GHZ cpu, faster than my first computer So I consider it Med High
