Defragmenter does not work

Running windows 7 Professional. I am unable to access Windows defragmenter by any means. I have tried Start Menu, Cmd Line, dfrgui.exe. All that happens is a very short burst of action by the CPU and nothing! I am, therefore, unable to set a timed defrag!

It is possible that this is associated with the Tasking Scheduler, which is another recent problem. If I automate my system backup, the Tasking Scheduler then shows 'Selected Task ("{0}") no longer exists and then shows the application as 'Not Available'.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Can you check to see whether the defrag service is enabled? See below.

If it's enabled all you should have to do is Start and type defrag and it will be at the top. If you cmd prompt goes away very quickly try using it as administrator.
