I know what you're thinking. "Do I really want this new Start screen? Do I want go go through a learning experience to deal with this?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this Windows 8 pre-release excitement I kind of considered this myself.

But being as this is the most important upgrade to Microsoft's desktop OS in over a decade, the most widely used desktop OS in the world, and that XP is now eleven years old, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

People may find it hard to adapt to the Windows 8 UI, especially if someone wants to purchase a new OEM desktop/laptop, and have been using Windows XP/Windows 7 for the last few years.

I still don't like the concept of the new UI on desktops, it would work fine with a tablet, but the classic Windows desktop Start Menu we have had for the last 20 years will probably never be disliked by users.

The Arthur of that article stated he gave his wife 15 min of training and she has had no complaints. So just a little education and most people will have no problems using Windows 8. "Windows 8 For Dummies" is on sale now.

My only complaint about the Windows 8 Metro UI is the lack of folders (like iOS and Android) to put the app icons in. It is, IMO much nicer than the start menu ever was. I say this as I am using Windows 8 Release Preview. It does take a bit to get used to some of the differences, but its worth it. I also showed it to a few other people who liked the simplicity of it.

You and me both Tpau. In fact I recently bought a new W7 computer for the specific purpose of avoiding W8.

I won't be upgrading anytime soon I'm happy with windows 7. If it ain't broke why fix it.

I am an old dog, but I still learn a few new tricks. However I don't see the point in making a real computer look like a tablet.

Not planning on using W8 unless MS offers a way to have the start menu and desktop like W7.

Not from MS, but classic shell already make that possible

I agree too that Win8 is a downgrade compared to Win7. The new UI is too tablet-specific and gets in the way in so many forms that makes impractical for real usage. Sure, it CAN be done and anyone with practice can learn and use it like any other version, but you'll be doing in a non optimal way and wasting time searching for options instead of just doing your work.

I try to stay away from third party software that makes changes to the OS. But I have not noticed any complaints about classic shell, not that I have been looking.

Happy with W7 for now!

W7 doesn't need Classic Shell because it was done right to begin with, unlike W8.
So the question begs to be asked.......Why buy W8 and use Classic Shell to make it look more like W7???

I'm with you bumpkin, W8 is a downgrade from W7.

Most people have used a smart phone and/or tablet, Windows 8 is a very small step from there.

It takes less than 5 minutes to learn the new UI, most important is getting to the Desktop.
I find the new UI useful for a couple of things, kinda like a dock program, like something from Stardock.

The actual improvements and benefits (not counting the new UI) are very good.

That's exactly the problem, it was DESIGNED for smart phones and tablets, not desktop PCs.
They could probably design a mouse to use for your smart phone too, but it might be kinda awkward because smart phones weren't designed to be used with a mouse!
Neither were desktops designed for a tablet OS.
