Solved DELL 490 2 DUAL CORE @2.66

considering buying used dell 490 to replace my dell 280. Any comments on the 490 model, I believe about 4/5 yeras old.

Seems like a decent machine Depends a bit on what kind of things you plan to do with it though. And since it's second hand, the inside might differ from what Dell put in it.

Thanks ... it's basic stock 4 g of mem. 160 sata hd no other changes from original unit. Selling for $400 on Ebay as lease return.

I'd look up some benchmarks on that Xeon processor and compare the results to what I could get from a more modern PC.

Xeons are stout, but buying a 4 year old workstation would give me pause. You might be better off with a new PC rather than an old workstation?

Some 490s are dual core Xeons 5100s; some are quad core 5300s

Sample passmark CPU scores:

Xeon 5355 2.66ghz: 6795

Xeon 5150 2.66ghz; 3486

As a comparison with PCs:

Intel Core 2 9400 quad core 2.66 ghz: 3411

Intel i5-2500 3.3 ghz: 6523

Intel i5-750 2.67 ghz: 4234

thanks it's 2 *dual core 5150 Xeon which i understand gives a Quad core processor. I have to agree at $400 for a 4 year machine is on the high side but it's almost half of a new unit... I'll just keep looking.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money you could consider a basic upgrade kit.

Yes a good thought but my Dell 280 is getting on about 7 years or more. I have updated a few thinks and it runs Win. 7 just fine.
The Dell 490 has just what I need and at $350 I would do it but $429 just to high for 5 year old unit.
