Dell monitor driver question.

Apparently, Dell doesn't support Win 7 32 or 64bit drivers for my 2405FPW monitor. No support Vista either. What is installed is a Microsoft PnP generic (version 6.1.7600.16385 dated 6/21/06). So, can the original Dell Win XP driver be installed in Compatibility Mode for XP SP3 & as Administrator? Or, what's the chances of drivers for Dell's latest monitor (2408WFP) working with my 2405FPW? Could installing that be a disaster or is it best to leave well enough alone? I'm asking because some graphic monitor software I'd like to use doesn't recognize the generic monitor driver.

You can try installing it in XP compatibility, but I don't know if it will work.

Don't know how skilled you are, or how far you'd like to go, but I found someone who said they rewrote the .inf file to work with Windows 7. Be sure to save your original if you try. Make a restore point before as well. 3rd post down HERE

You could just use your graphics card drivers to configure your monitor settings.
Use Nvidia and not Dell drivers, you'll have better results.

I was going to suggest that except he wrote this:

The message in the 4th post is the same one I get. And, no, I'm not skilled enough to be too daring. Ubuntu, maybe, not Windows or Mac.

I take it that just trying to install the newer Dell driver will fail because the model names are different, right? I was afraid of that.

The monitor, now that I've replaced my graphic card, performs very well. It when I was having graphic issues that I wanted to monitor my card for trouble shooting. I couldn't then & can't now because the desktop monitor software doesn't recognize the generic MS PnP driver. It might be simpler to contact the 3rd poster who re-wrote the driver (although he didn't respond to the 4th posters' question; unless it was a private message) or find another type of graphic monitor software that does recognize the PnP driver. Wouldn't hurt to try.

A Guy suggested checking out a poster @ start64.com (SnakeProZone) who had re-written the .inf file needed for my 2405FPW Dell monitor. For whatever reason, that forum has closed & I cannot contact the author to confirm if the new driver indeed works. So, I'm hoping someone here might have some knowledge in this area.

I have attached a .doc Word file. The original is on the left & new on the right with differences in BOLD RED. I admit, I haven't a clue what would or wouldn't work as I am not skilled in this. If anyone can confirm that it is legit or if there's no harm in trying it, please post your thoughts.

In reading the original post, I could see nothing that could harm your PC. Worst case scenario is it won't work for you. Even if you couldn't boot after (highly unlikely) you can boot to safe mode and run system restore to the point you made before trying. Or even manually change back to the original. I think worth a shot, although the follow up poster didn't seem to be able to even get Windows to try it. Good luck, A Guy

GARoss, I have the same problem, win 7 64 will not recognize the monitor;
I tried to download your file but the download wasn't working.

Okay, since I have it connected to laptop, so I switched to external monitor only display (not duplicate) Nvidia GTX 670 recognized Dell's 1920x1200 resolution and I didn't need a monitor driver.
Thank you AddRam, your screen shot helped me recognize that the GTX is matching both screens.

Sorry to be late in helping out, AshTree. I have since changed monitors but gave the 2405FPW to a friend who just bought an inexpensive Dell desktop (Windows 7-64bit) & needed a monitor. The proper driver was detected, loaded & went to 1920x1200 rez without issues. AddRAM's advice was spot on!
