Solved Dell Optiplex 745 Orange Light on Mobo

Hello all,

I know this is a common issue online but none of the things I'm trying seem to work!

When I hit the power button on my PC (dell optiplex 745 minitower) it refuses to turn on, and no fans or anything start up at all.

What I've tried?

-replacing CMOS battery
-grab a spare psu, installed it, still didn't work
-uninstalled the RAM and reinstalled it
-made sure the RAM was separated by one company at a time just in case, since there were 2 companies or makers of ram in at once. No luck.

-changed my power plug
-had cmos battery removed, started up pc without the battery, then reinstalled it, no luck
-put a new cmos battery in and did the same as above


All of these things lead to the orange light on the motherboard and nothing else.

Is my motherboard fried? I've just bought it on ebay as a fun little pc (not as a main one).

I'm out of ideas to try to fix this.

The light on the motherboard only shows that there is power for the light (nothing else) from the power supply.

Since you replaced the PSU and nothing.

Try jumpering the GREEN to BLACK on the 24 pin power connector and see if it starts up. If it does, there is a problem with the front panel power switch or cabling or possibly a problem on the motherboard for the power on.

My last question is that it is not detecting my hard drive now, is that normal? How do I fix this?

Do you have both the SATA data cable connected (both on the motherboard and at the hard drive) and the Power connection?

Check the BIOS (Dell calls it Setup) and see if it is detected there. F2 at power on should access the BIOS.

Ah, I've found out the issue. I had to reset the bios with the jumpering again. Thank you again for all the help. I will now mark this thread as solved
