Denied external drive permission after factory reset

Okay, the full scan is complete. Odd, because I have MalWareBytes active all the time, but it found 88 items of various types. Removed every last one, rebooted, and the same results.

I suppose I'll start moving things around and format one of them, and replace the files to see if things change.

I do, but I have to get rid of the padlocks...

Just add Administrators with full control. Then you can open the folders as an administrative user.

I did, and I have the folders back (without locks), but the shortcuts are back as well.

Deleted all the shortcuts, so we'll see if they stick. So far, so good. A couple days and a few reboots should tell.

I have always disliked MAC computers, but now may be the time to switch. This stuff with the PC and Windows OS is becoming annoying.

I have cleaned all my drives, so I know they're MALWARE free, rotated data around so I could reformat the drives, set the attributes and permissions for each, transferred some 700 GB of movies to one drive, and everything showed up fine. Then, sometime during the night, with no activity on the system, the folders diappeared, even though the space used is accounted for and I can see them using FreeCommander (freeware dual pane manager). I checked the permissions of the drive, and they have changed. I did have the owner as my personal admin account, but it's now changed to "SYSTEM". Changed the owner back my admin account, but the folders still don't show.

I think I'm going MAC shopping, even though I hate being limited to what Apple provides for software without having to run VMWare for Windows 3rd party stuff.

What about if you right click the whole drive right after opening My Computer/Computer and change the security settings and set ownership that way?

I have been setting the whole drive(s).

Very strange. I have never seen that behavior before. I assume if you do the attrib /s /d -h -s * command in command prompt the folders come back?

What if you add to Securtiy SYSTEM and deny full access. Does that prevent it from hiding your folders?

I'm curious, too...I am experiencing something similar. I recently did a reimage and keep my files on an external hard drive (music, photos, etc.). All my apps/programs are installed on C:/OS-drive. Went to use my media player and am getting all kinds of "can't find file" or "access is denied" when trying to open them in the media player or view them in Windows Image Viewer. I've set ownership to administrator on the external drive, but am also getting padlocks on some of the directories and the same errors accessing them.

So, I played with this a little more...I only had a few affected directories and on those, I tweaked the permissions further: Security > Advanced > Change Permissions > select Administrators > click Edit > selected the Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only option > click OK > selected include inheritable permissions from this object's parent > selected replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object > click OK > click OK to close out of the other dialog boxes and seem to be back in business! Good luck!

Your problem was a permissions issue. The OP had a virus/malware cause, so slightly different. Glad you were able to get the permissions/ownership resolved.

Hopefully this isn't bumping an old thread, applogies for the extremely delayed reply haven't had the luxury of time to get back to addressing this problem.

Having had some other unrelated issues (probably caused by what was stated in http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/204866-denied-external-drive-permission-after-factory-reset-5.html#post1782566)I did another factory reset so as far as the external drives goes I'm back to square one. Haven't altered any of the settings with regard to it yet.

Should I follow the commands in http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware...ission-after-factory-reset-2.html#post1721870 but replace C with the current drive E where the external is registered as?

Yes, use that command with G: instead of C:. Make very sure you do not use C:

Tried it but replacing C: with E: since that's now the drive it's on, although it said access denied.
