Your first problem is that you are using x64 but OS with 1 gig of RAM. It needs at least one more, or go back to x86.

ram shortage? im not sure but i know some people who had the same problem with higher ram

egood and RockyFord are from other forum.

egood said:
Happening on 2 machines pretty much at same time. One is Asus Notebook with a Mobile Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs of ram, other is Desktop Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs of ram. Notebook has nvidia 8600 mobile, desktop has 2 ATi Radeon X1900s.

After the computers sit idle for a while, I will come back and the desktop will be unresponsive except the mouse will still move. I cant click on any icons and the task bar wont move. I found that I could unfreeze it by hitting ctrl-alt-del and bringing up the task manager, that seemed to bring things back to normal. The displays did turn off after 10min, which I've changed to never now, and the computers never go to sleep.

RockyFord said:
I am running win7rc 64 on a home build, asus m2a-vm mb, ati hd4670, 4 gig OCZ ram. All drivers are current win 7 or latest Vista64 drivers. Away device is disabled.

Symptoms: when my computer is in use it performs as advertised, no problems with booting lockups or anything.
after my machine sits idle for approx. 20 minutes the desktop stops responding to mouse and keyboard inputs, the monitor will turn back on. Sometimes the desktop will recover functionality in 3 to 5 minutes and sometimesit does not recover at all.
The power options are set to turn off monitor at 20 mins, sleep: never, Hibernate: never.
I have looked in all the usual places on the internet for suggestions and came up blank.

P.S. I have checked and adjust the usb and lan settings for wake settings. I have turned off all the bios settings I can related to APM and AMD Live and Cool n Quiet and the C1E setting.

I'm at a total wall Please help.

and this what i found from our own forum:

I've had a problem for a while with the 64bit Ultimate edition. It would lock up and you could move the mouse pointer, but nothing else worked and a full reset was the only way out.
I tried all of the fixes that have been suggested on various forums, including disabling reporting back to Microsoft developers, but it persisted.
I seem to have finally tamed it by disabling screen blanking. I've left the screen saver running, but no other shutdowns of anything and it's now stabilised. It's no big deal, as I have a KVM switch and I simply switch to another PC which can blank its screen.

The mobo is an Asus P5QC running a Quad Core processor with 8Gb ram and an ATI graphics card with a fully Windows 7 driver downloaded from the AMD site.

Regards,

Alan.

I have exactly the same problem. I've found that if left for long enough, usually it will come back. Sometimes its a full 15 minutes but it will unfreeze. I hate to have to turn off screen blanking but I also hate having to force restart on a regular basis. Anyone have any ideas on this?

they have the exact some problem, alan has massively 8 gigs of ram (should i increase mine to 2 gigs?) :roflmao:
and so far the solution to fix this instead having "turn off display after" settings is none.

all please cope one this one.

YES WE CAN!

Well I think it is "turn display off after" that is causing it...it seems to be the only common setting....mine hasn't frozen on me since I've set it to not shut the monitor off....another person found it was his torrent client causing the problem, but it ended up being a nic card driver issue.

yes, i do know what causing it. it's because "turn off monitor" settings :geek:. and thats what im asking from this thread, how to make me able to use that settings without any desktop freeze

Try installing monitor drivers.

~Lordbob

hey, ill try this.

but ive found something. when i disabled (unticked) "auto-hide the taskbar" in taskbar properties, i can solve the desktop freeze.

the problem is, i like to have that setting on. it increases the space of my desktop.

anyhow, why does auto-hide task bar makes the desktop freeze?

Could be Win7 bug, graphics driver bug, whatever.

Guess you'll have to wait for first fixes from windows update, or newer graphics driver.
(this will be low on the priority list, so it might take some time.)

In the mean time you will have to live with this little annoyance, or change settings to avoid this problem, and live with not auto hiding the taskbar.

Greetz

hi, good to know I'm not the only one with this problem :D

i have been running windows 7 for a few months now and this is the only problem i found,... that bugs me insanely :D ...

i have and i7 processor, 6 gigs DDR3, nvidia 275 with latest drivers...

auto hide taskbar, and screen turn-of (i like both of these xD)... and when i come back after a while it freezes for 5-10 seconds and then comes back to life... music running all the time, no problems with that, just the firkin' frozen screen :D

so, it's not your computers only :D :( :D hope they fix it soon :D bugging me :D
