Desktop Freezes Up

If I drawing a square around a group of desktop icons and then click outside the square to de-emphasize, the desktop will many times freezes up. Start menu and everything else works fine. A simple restart will reset the desktop.

I run Win 7 x64 Home Premium with an Asus PQ5-EM and Intel E8400 and with 8gb OCZ DDR2 PC6400 Reaper.

This would not be the first course of action for most of the users here, but since it has been 8 hours since your post, and nobody else has answered, can I recommend a Repair Install?
Just a thought. No guarantee it will work, but it certainly won't hurt anything.
