Desktop icons appearing and disappearing

My laptop running on Windows 7 recently started giving me problems when i switch it on the desktop items appear but when i try to click on any one of them the whole d/top goes blank and when i left click on the d/top or click the start button they will re-appear...i can not access my documents without going through the start button..please help my show desktop icon is highlighted.

First run a full antivirus scan
Then download and give a full scan with malwarebytes.

If negative

Go to device manager, check graphics driver. Make sure it is up to date and no yellow warning markers are shown.

Yes, please do a virus scan. If the virus scan does not fix it, might as well, try system restore, if this won't do either, reinstall Windows.
