When I right-click a filename in Explorer in order to copy or delete the file, the icons on the Windows 7 desktop all go to the default appearance, then one by one their usual appearance is restored. All this causes a delay and seems to be unnecessary. Is there a way of preventing this?

You can try rebuilding the icon cache and see if that fixes the problem. See the following link if you don't know how to do this on your own. Icon Cache - Rebuild
