I suddenly got blue "+" icons over some of my desktop icons.
I don't remember installing new software lately, but it may be that someone else in my family did.
What is it and how can I get rid of them?

It Is likely this has been added by a piece software but im not sure what
Go to add/remove programs and sort the list by date installed this will give you an idea of the most recently installed stuff

It appears on both regular (non shortcuts) files and shortcuts to folders. It does not appear on shortcuts to programs.

It also doesn't appear on any files created lately, after these "+" signs were added. They were added once and that is it.

Did you check to see if any programs were installed recently that may have caused this

I see some programs that were installed lately, I tried to uninstall some suspects, but it did not help for now.

No, sorry, my mistake. There are some shortcuts to exe files that do have this "+" sign. I can't seem to find consistent rules as to where it appears and where it doesn't.

I do not have norton backup installed.

Source: ... I forget to copy.

Here is how I fixed it even though I do NOT have Norton backup turned on:

To turn off backup setting options

In the Norton 360 main window, click Settings.

In the Settings window, under Detailed Settings, click Backup Settings.

In the Settings window for Backup Settings, do one of the following:

To turn off icon overlays, in the Backup Status Overlays row, move the On/Off switch to the right to the Off position.

To turn off Norton Backup Drive, in the Norton Backup Drive row, move the On/Off switch to the right to the Off position.

To turn off right-click backup menu, in the Context Menu row, move the On/Off switch to the right to the Off position.

To turn off Backup tab in the Properties page, in the Property Page row, move the On/Off switch to the right to the Off position.

I'm really sorry, I'm trying to post a reply on a different thread but it's posted here, and I don't seem to be able to delete it here. Sorry!

The clean start up didn't solve the problem.

After restart, new "?" signs were added to some of the icons on the desktop (that were "clean" before that). This is so strange!

I see eset found and got rid of the B/S.
That is good but didn't solve the problem.

I will go back to thinking and watching. If I get anymore ideas I will let you know.
