Desktop icons wont stay hid no matter what I do!

I ran into another problem!
I got my new laptop for Christmas, and Im trying to hide the desktop icons because I have a dock, (Rocketdock.com)

And whenever I right click, go to View, then uncheck "Show Desktop Icons" they disappear, but when I unplug my charger they come right back!

I've tried hiding the icons, then saving my theme, but it doesn't seem to work

I hope someone can help!

At the bottom of the page with the check, do you uncheck let themes change desktop icons?

At the bottom of the page with the check, do you uncheck let themes change desktop icons?

I dont think I know where you're talking about.
But I did find "Change desktop icons" in Personalize
and "Allow themes to change desktop icons" is checked

I think I found your problem, when you uncheck, you have to hit apply at the bottom of the page.

It is a malfunction in your system. Try this in an adminsitrators account, type cmd, in the search by start menu

In cmd typ sfc /scannow.

This feature is suppose to correct small corruption problems

If it does not work, when I return to the forum we will try something. Just keep me posted.

You can try this too. When you go to the area that you check the icons that you want. Click on restore default. Power down, reboot and then uncheck all that is checked. That may correct the bug.

Okay, I tried this, and after i rebooted, and I opened it back up, nothing was checked :shock:

When I clicked the "restore default" nothing happen, but then when I restarted, and opened it back up, nothing changed

Ok, I just thought that I would check in before calling it a night. I had several ideas on what the cause of the problem could be. When you try these ideas out, you can post the results. If I am available, I would be more than happy to assist you again. If someone else comes along, they will be helpful, too. They may even have some fresh ideas. I never encoutered something like this. Here are my thoughts

Problem can be caused by conflict with your rocket dock, or corruption in your user account, or possibly you are not in an administrators account (but this is probably the least likely problem). The easy way to test this is to make a new administrators account. Put some icons on the desktop and see if they can be removed. If they can be removed we know that the problem is due to one of the variables. We can pinpoint it by changing one at a time. For example if you set up a new account and the problem is solved, change the account to a standard user account, if it still works that is not the problem and so on.

Ill check back tomorrow, hopefully this will be solved.

Maybe just putting the pointer on the icon and right clicking then delete, may work. So far normal methods just seem to fail.

If above does not work try clicking on the icon then cntrl, a, delete at the same time.

Whenever actions like this are attempted, you should have a restore point made in System Restore so that you can return to the condition before change, if change unacceptable.

And guess what!
I made a new account and the icons are staying hid! :sarc:

First I made the account as administrator, and the problem still applied.
Then I went back and changed it to Standard, and the problem fixed! On only that account of course.

I unplugged the charger, and they were still hid

So at least we know now that its something on my account having to do with being an administrator

I wish I could do a restore, but i've barely had the computer for 24 hours!

I also just tried exiting out of Rocketdock, and then trying to hide the icons, and unplugging my charger, but it didnt seem to work

I hope you have an idea of what I can try next!

I think you should do what I do .Take everything from your standard account, using windows easy transfer (from Microsoft site), its real easy, and transfer everything to the standard account.. You probably would prefer not to take that route. Use the standard account, you avoid that problem. The second benefit, this is is debated, if you go to a site with a virus, it gets into the standard account, cannot do as much damage. One of my fellow members, will probably post, explaining why I am wrong, but think about it, makes sense doesn't it? I promise, you, I only use a standard account. During my attempts to help you I learned (one of the reasons I help here is to learn. The best way to learn is to teach), but cannot verify that essential icons cannot be removed from an Adm account.

Thats actually not the first time I've heard that!
The only thing Im worried about, is that, would I still be able to install programs? edit directories, run programs as Admin, ect. without getting that stupid message saying "Access denied, You must be an admin to do this" Or something like that?

Whats are the actual restrictions of being a standard user vs. administrator?

Hi, I was afraid that you forgot about me. In any event, what I am suggesting is keep both accounts. When you want to install use the adminsitrator account. If you are in a standard account the system is suppose to ask you for the adm password for permission.
But before you do anything make a system restore point. Try what you made dont like it. Use system restore to put it back and then you can come back here. I have this thread on my monitoring system, I am notified if anyone posts. So, System Restore, then make changes and then come back if you are not happy.

I think I found a way I can live with
Basically what I did was, I used your advice about going to the Icon settings, and I hid the recycle bin, then I deleted all the shortcuts and moved my folders, So now all the icons on my desktop are hid!

Do you mind if I ask you a couple questions to see if you may know the answer so I don't have to post a new thread?

For some reason I cant drag and drop photos into Adobe Photoshop CS4
On my old desktop before my laptop, I never had this problem.

But now, when I click on a photo and drag it to Photoshop, it just shows the symbol of the circle with the line through it

My second question was, In "My Documents" My videos are only showing icons, and not thumbnail previews of the video. How can I change this?

The most common cause of losing the thumbnail previews is a graphics card that is not powerful enough to produce the desired result.

For the second question you need someone familiar with Photoshop, and I am not.

My advice, for your benefit, start a new thread. Title it Problems with Photoshop. In this way, those with expertise in that area will come to your assistance.

I am closing this thread as closed, so others do not stumble in, read three pages of posts to come to a dead end.

OP, is your comp laptop and an asus by any chance? I had the same problem with my laptop and it ended up being the stupid power settings that comes with asus U have to choose office then uncheck HIDE ICONS
