New to Windows 7, ran XP in windows classic.

I am used to saving a file out of a folder and visibly onto the desktop to edit it and save under a different name and possibly in a different folder. No issues

With 7 it does not save the file visibly onto the desktop but into the desktop folder. Not where I want it. How do I get the file to save onto the desktop?

Note quite sure what your asking, Are you trying to move a file from a folder to your desktop for editing? Or are you saving something edited to your desktop?

Choose "Save As" ( Usually Shift Ctrl S ) from the keyboard).

Or from the dropdown menu;

saveas.jpg

( Screenshot is notepad, but practically all editors use the same or similar commands).

You will get a screen like this;

and can save the file wherever you want.

Check out this post. It'll make future saving to desktop easier too

The Desktop folder should be the same thing as your actual desktop. I save things there all the time because I use my desktop as my scratch pad area.
