When I followed the instructions (easy to follow, well wrtitten) it made no difference to the nothingness within the "Change Adapter Settings" window. I even restarted the PC and checked the registry. That key is gone

This legible? While restarting the PC (see above) I reenabled the adapter in the BIOS. That odd one disappeared and was replaced with something else. I'll get a shot of that like this attachment if it worked for you

You found the driver I used for the CT adapter. Made no difference which driver set I used, the result was the same.
Here is a shot of the controllers with the onboard enabled.

Onboard is off, only one controller now in device manager. Don't know why that odd controller was showing up earlier when the onboard was off then as well.
Noticed in Network & Sharing Center to the right of the network icon (2 PCS hooked together) is Unknow in boldface. Below it is "The dependency service or group failed to start"

No, I get "You're not connected to a network". Norton Internet security stating no connection either. The icon in the lower right has a red X.

Why do you say remove NIS? It was just an example of one of the programs that cannot access the internet during startup. Another is Outlook.

Out of curiosity I entered: ipconfig /all at the cmd prompt, and I got back
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . .: TJ-PC
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . : No
Nothing else, and from what I've seen in the past there is supposed to be a lot more.

During first restart during Norton removal process I went into the Intel(R) Boot Agent and found that at this level the PWA Number and the MAC Address of the CT Adapter card I bought yesterday is correctly identified and matches the sticker on the adapter. JUst not showing up in the "ipconfig /all" results.
Related note: Windows firewall is not working either.

I downloaded that Norton app at 5:33 this am. It is now 8:33. Took 3 hours to get that thing to run.
Ran it twice, restarting each time. It did suggest at the end if not installing a Norton product to turn on Windows Firewall.
I got: There was an error opening Windows Firewall with Advanced Security Snap-in. The WFwASS failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall Service on the computer that you are managing. Error code 0x6D9
No surprise there as it has not worked since the whole internet access thing began.
Still not connecting. Same ipconfig info as recently posted. Still a blank window when I open Change Adapter Settings. Still a red X on the network icon in the lower right.

Went into Services and checked to see if Win Firewall set to automatic. It is. I get a 1068 if I try to start it.
