Different Ram speeds

Hello there,

I recently purchased a Micron DDR2 2g ram and it's max speed is 400Mhz, I also have 2 Kreton DDR2 1g rams and both their max speed is 333Mhz, I do know that the new Micron ram will operate with the speed of the Kreton, but I was wondering, would it effect gaming or any other system operations? also I will be installing Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit in a few hours, would the different speeds of these rams cause a confict, problems with the windows or in any future use? or should I just get another Micron ram and replace it with the Kretons so that the ram speeds are the same?

If your system is running fine now it shouldn't make a difference. The only thing is the two different speeds of your ram would be the only problem. The slower speed ram (333 MHz), however, will be the speed the system will run at for memory. A system will always run at the slowest memory simm speed, you just cannot make slower speed memory simms run at higher ram speeds.

If you can afford it try and get at least 4 gigs of DDR2 800 or higher if you are going to be running a 64 bit OS. It will run a lot smoother.

It's settled then. Thank you for your fast reply and good advice, I will get another Micron DDR2-800. That's the highest I can afford right now. I should be able to get better ones by next summer when I upgrade my processor along with my video card.

I just want my current PC to kick some serious ass, I've suffered for 6 years with a P4 2.00Ghz and only 512 SDRAM, OMG, thank God that those days are over.

I agree with Lee.

It should all run at 333 MHz.

If the DDR2 2GB 333 MHz timings are the same (maybe if very close) as the original DDR2 1GB 333 MHz it should run.

Better if they are matched.

I would put the RAM in with the old OS (Vista or XP?) to make sure it will run.
During the install, to be safe, take out the new 2GB card and leave the original 2 x 1GB cards.

I was using windows xp x32 before and I also used windows xp x64 and they all worked fine, then I got windows 7 x32 and now I'm going to perform a clean setup for windows 7 x64.

Okay, thank you for the heads up, I should probably remove the new ram and install it again after the windows has finished the setup.

I would take the new RAM out for the installation, just to be safe. Put it back in after the installation.

It's been noted in other threads and sites that XP will run with RAM errors, this is not a good thing, So if you have any problems with installation try switching the RAM, leave only one card for the installation. Try them all after.
