Different views when opening external hard drives

Sometimes when I open a folder, I get an a to z list of all the files. Sometimes when I open an external drive, the files are separated into categories based on file type.

All of my folders are listed followed by a horizontal line break. Then My ISOs are listed, followed by mp3,Avi, etc etc.

I dislike the second layout. How do I get Windows 7 to always use the first layout: the layout where it's just the a to z list of all my files ?

You can set list or details view in view menu. Then in Options => View click Apply to Folders. The thing with external drives is Explorer is likely to forget the setting if the drive is seen as removable.
