Hi,

Is it possible to disable the search box in Windows Explorer without disabling Windows Search? That box is so ugly and intrusive that it makes me afraid to use Explorer at all.

Around 1996 a group of Microsoft developers got together and created a bunch of unofficial "PowerToys" One of those toys was Tweak UI which allowed users to customize the Windows user interface and advanced settings. Many changes were possible and most were not provided within the operatins system itself.

So, yes, I would tend to agree with you. There might be a way to accomplish what you're looking for by tweaking Windows 7. Unfortunately, it might also require the use of a 3rd party app or utility since it's not officiallly sanctioned or offered by Microsoft. And because of this Forum's rule # 6 all I can suggest is you could try some innovative googling. :zip:

Hi

Go to control panel > Programs and Features

Next in the left panel click on the Turn Windows features on or off

Scroll down the list and uncheck the box next to Windows Search

Then Click YES and then OK

You will get a message to restart the system

Reboot and See

Apparently not. According to our intrepid tutorial maker it's all or nothing. (See the Warnings.)

Hi, marsmimar,

My reasoning is that it must be possible since it’s possible to remove the Explorer toolbar.

Hello Rand,

Sorry, but it's an all or none setting to remove the Search box in Windows Explorer. :(

One alternative is to use a 3rd party file explorer program like Explorer++ or FreeCommander instead of Windows Explorer.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Classic Shell has an option to hide the Search box from the Explorer title bar. Works in Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Those 3rd-party explorers are god-awful, and Classic Shell clumsily removes the search box from the search window, which I use.

Thanks anyway, guys.

I don't understand. Isn't that exactly what you asked for?

Hi, ivo,

No. I want to remove the search box from normal Explorer windows only, not including the search window activated by Win+F.

We seriously dont understand!!! You want to remove from explorer and still keep the functionality of search for other areas.. classic shell does that by hiding the search box from explorer..

As a common sense.. when you use Win+F... its going to use Windows explorer itself !!!!

Sorry but we are all mere mortal who understand less of computers and windows than you do !!
